Gadabay Rayon
Gadabay District () is one of the 66 districts of Azerbaijan. It is located in the west of the country and belongs to the Gazakh-Tovuz Economic Region. The district borders the districts of Dashkasan, Shamkir, Tovuz. Its administrative center is the city of Gadabay and it has been a major settlement for nearly 2,000 years. It is part of the ancient culture of Khojaly and Gadabay. As of 2020, the population of the district is 101.062 Etymology The toponym is derived from the ancient Turkish words "ket", "gedik"(hill) and "bek" (guard, watchman). Novosaratovka
Novosaratovka (also, Novaya Saratovka) is a village, municipality and minor transport hub in the Gadabay Rayon of Azerbaijan. It has a population of 2,328. Though it's probably older, the current settlement was originally founded in the 1830s by Russians of the Doukhobor sect, one of several ''Old Believer'' villages in the area including nearby Novoivanovka and Gorelsk (now Daşbulaq). History According to grave inscriptions, the first recorded Russian settler was a certain Batayev, who arrived in 1837. During the 1840s and 1850s, Novosaratovka attracted a steady influx of immigrants from Russia, especially from the Balashovsky District of Saratov. Many of them, being serfs or being recruited, did not officially have the right to travel to the Transcaucasus and therefore lived essentially as fugitives, often changing their names to disguise their backgrounds. Old Believers
Old Believers or Old Ritualists ( Russian: староверы, ''starovery'' or старообрядцы, ''staroobryadtsy'') is the common term for several religious groups, which maintain the old liturgical and ritual practices of the Russian Orthodox Church, as they were before the reforms of Patriarch Nikon of Moscow between 1652 and 1657. The old rite and its followers were anathematized in 1667, and Old Belief gradually emerged from the resulting schism. The antecedents of the movement regarded the reform as heralding the End of Days, and the Russian church and state as servants of the Antichrist. Fleeing persecution by the government, they settled in remote areas or escaped to the neighboring countries. Their communities were marked by strict morals and religious devotion, including various taboos meant to separate them from the outer world.
