The ''Dawson Creek Daily News'' was a daily newspaper serving Dawson Creek and the South Peace River region of northeastern British Columbia, Canada. The paper was founded in 1930 as the ''Peace River Block News'' and was owned by Glacier Media between 2006 and 2023. Later known as the ''Dawson Creek Mirror'', the paper's last edition was published in October of 2023. History Charles S. Kitchen, James E. "Cap" Lean and Bill Carruthers produced the first edition of the weekly ''Peace River Block News'' in 1930 in Rolla, British Columbia. Half a year later, Dawson Creek became a rail hub and the newspaper relocated there. The Kitchen family continued to run and grow the paper; by 1970 it was printing 5,300 copies per week and employed a staff of 22. Hollinger Inc. was a Canadian media company based in Toronto which was established in 1985 by businessman Conrad Black. At one time, the company was the third-largest media empire in the world. News Desert
A news desert is a community that is no longer covered by daily or nondaily newspapers. ''Alaska Highway News'' was the paper of record for Fort St. John, the North Peace River region, and Dawson Creek in northeastern British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1943 by Margaret Lally "Ma" Murray, it was largely under corporate ownership for the rest of its 80-year-old publication history before being shuttered by Glacier Media in 2023. The Peace River Country (or Peace Country; ) is an aspen parkland region centring on the Peace River in Canada. It extends from northwestern Alberta to the Rocky Mountains in northeastern British Columbia, where a certain portion of the region is also referred to as the Peace River Block.
