David Nibert
David Alan Nibert (born 1953) is an American sociologist, author, activist and professor of sociology at Wittenberg University. He is the co-organizer of the Section on Animals and Society of the American Sociological Association. In 2005, he received their Award for Distinguished Scholarship. Work Nibert connects animal rights theory with other economic and sociological theories. According to Nibert, speciesism is an ideology that seeks to legitimize animal slavery, defending the discrimination against sentient beings on account of their species. He promotes veganism and abolitionism. Nibert offers an "Animals and Society" course at Wittenberg University to spread awareness of animal oppression. Steven Best (born December 1955) is an American philosopher, writer, speaker and activist. His concerns include animal rights, species extinction, human overpopulation, ecological crisis, biotechnology, liberation politics, terrorism, mass media and culture, globalization, and capitalist domination. Critical animal studies (CAS) (not to be confused with Animal Studies) is an educational field that critically examines human relationships with nonhuman animals, with a focus on social justice and animal liberation. Challenging the conventional anthropocentric views of humans on animals, it recognizes and acknowledges the inherent value of nonhuman animals and aims to create a more equitable and ethical relationship between humans and other animals. Animal–industrial complex (AIC) is a concept used by activists and scholars to describe what they contend is the systematic and institutionalized exploitation of animals. The term was adapted from the " Military-industrial complex" outlined by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1961.
