David Bloomberg
David Bloomberg (1932 – 26 October 2020) was a former Mayor of Cape Town, lawyer, anti-apartheid campaigner, theatre columnist, theatre director and author. Early life Bloomberg was born in the Cape Town suburb of Sea Point in 1932, and educated at Christian Brother's College and the University of Cape Town. His father, Abe Bloomberg, was a leading lawyer, MP, and the Mayor of Cape Town from 1945 to 1947, and his mother, Miriam, was a ballerina and ballet teacher. Career Bloomberg joined his father's law firm, Bloomberg, Baigel & Co. where he made his name as a lawyer. He was the defence attorney for Dimitri Tsafendas, who fatally stabbed the Prime Minister, Dr H.F. Verwoerd, in Parliament in 1966. He was also passionate about the Arts and created the Barn Theatre in the garden of his family's home in Constantia. COVID-19
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease caused by a virus, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The first known case was identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The disease quickly spread worldwide, resulting in the COVID-19 pandemic. The symptoms of COVID‑19 are variable but often include fever, cough, headache, fatigue, breathing difficulties, loss of smell, and loss of taste. Symptoms may begin one to fourteen days after exposure to the virus. At least a third of people who are infected do not develop noticeable symptoms. Pinelands, Cape Town
Pinelands is an affluent garden city suburb located on the edge of the southern suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa, neighbouring the suburb of Thornton, and is known for its large thatched houses and green spaces. The suburb is primarily residential and is often praised for its peacefulness and abundance of trees. Pinelands is one of the few areas in Cape Town in which sale of alcohol to the public is prohibited, but some clubs have private liquor licenses. It is a popular place for senior citizens to retire to. While there are several retirement homes in the suburb, younger people are increasingly moving in. Toby Fine
Toby Fine (6 December 1932, Cape Town, South Africa - November 2010, Lugano, Switzerland) was a South African ballet dancer. She was a member of both the New York City Ballet and Johannesburg Festival Ballet Company. Early life Fine, the daughter of Issy and Paula Fine, was born in Cape Town. She attended Athlone High School in Johannesburg before enrolling at the Royal Academy of Dance in London where she gained her Advanced Honours Diploma and Solo Seal. In 1949 she was awarded the Adeline Genée Cup for the best dancer in Southern Africa and won the SA Ballet Open Competition in 1946, 1947, 1948 and 1949. Career She was a soloist for the New York City Ballet for a season after George Balanchine, then director of the company, picked her to replace an injured dancer for a performance at the Royal Opera House and kept her. Sea Point
Sea Point (Afrikaans: ''Seepunt'') is one of Cape Town's most affluent and densely populated suburbs, situated between Signal Hill and the Atlantic Ocean, a few kilometres to the west of Cape Town's Central Business District (CBD). Moving from Sea Point to the CBD, one passes first through the small suburb of Three Anchor Bay, then Green Point. Seaward from Green Point is the area known as Mouille Point (pronounced MOO-lee), where the local lighthouse is situated. It borders to the southwest the suburb of Bantry Bay.
