Société Dargaud (), doing business as Les Éditions Dargaud, is a publisher of Franco-Belgian comics series, headquartered in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. It was founded in 1936 by Georges Dargaud, publishing its first comics in 1943. History Initially, Dargaud published novels for women. In 1948, it started '' Line'', a "magazine for elegant women", as well as a French edition of the Belgian '' Tintin'' magazine. In 1960, Dargaud bought the weekly ''Pilote'' magazine from René Goscinny, Albert Uderzo, and Jean-Michel Charlier. Dargaud Media is a French production company and animation studio that produces animation, documentaries and feature-length films. It was created in 1984 by the French-Belgian comic book publishing house Dargaud. It is one of the production labels of Ellipse Animation of the Média-Participations group. Georges Dargaud (; 27 April 1911 – 18 July 1990) was a French publisher of comics, most famously ''Tintin'' magazine, ''Asterix'', and ''Lucky Luke'', through his Dargaud company. Biography Dargaud started out working as a broker for an advertising agency. In April 1936, he and his wife, Irène, founded Dargaud S.A. The publishing company focused on corporate communications and family magazines. In 1943, Dargaud began publishing comics, starting with ''Allo les jeunes''. Two years later, he published comic albums of ''Bob et Bobette'' by Loys Pétillot (not to be confused with the French version of Willy Vandersteen's ''Suske en Wiske''). In 1948, Dargaud was approached by Raymond Leblanc, the publisher of Belgian comic magazine '' Journal de Tintin''. Ellipsanime Productions (formerly known as Le Studio Ellipse and Ellipse Programme) is a French animation studio that produces television programs. It was founded in 1987. In February 2000 it merged with Expand SA; Expand sold the company to Dargaud in 2003, and it became Ellipsanime in 2004. In 2014, Ellipsanime bought the assets of Moonscoop SA. Ellipse has worked with many other animation companies, with the most reputable being Nelvana and Nickelodeon. Média-Participations () is a French media concern, controlled by a Belgian holding concern, specialized in Franco-Belgian comics. It has some forty publishers in its portfolio, including Dupuis, Dargaud, Le Lombard, Fleurus, La Martinière, and Abrams. History Média-Participations was created in 1986 by Rémy Montagne, a politician who had been a member of the French Parliament for three decades before starting in the publishing business. René Goscinny
René Goscinny (; ; 14 August 1926 – 5 November 1977) was a French comic editor and writer, who created the ''Asterix, Astérix'' comic book series with illustrator Albert Uderzo. Born in France to a Jewish family from Poland, he spent his childhood in Argentina where he attended French schools and later lived in the United States for a short period of time. There he met Belgian cartoonist Morris (cartoonist), Morris. After his return to France, they collaborated for more than 20 years on the comic series ''Lucky Luke'' (in what was considered the series' golden age). He wrote ''Iznogoud'' with Jean Tabary. ''Lucky Luke'' is a Western (genre), Western bande dessinée, comic album series created by Belgian cartoonist Morris (cartoonist), Morris in 1946. Morris wrote and drew the series single-handedly until 1955, after which he started collaborating with French writer René Goscinny. Their partnership lasted until Goscinny's death in 1977. Jean-Michel Charlier (; 30 October 1924 – 10 July 1989) was a Belgian comics writer. He was a co-founder of the famed Franco-Belgian comics magazine '' Pilote''.
