Darayya
Darayya () is a suburb of Damascus in Syria, the centre of Darayya lying south-west of the centre of Damascus. Administratively it belongs to Rif Dimashq. History and population Darayya is one of the oldest cities in Syria, reportedly the place where Paul the Apostle had his conversion (30s AD), "on Damascus road". In 1838, Eli Smith noted ''Daraya'' as being located in the ''Wady el-'Ajam'', and being populated by Sunni Muslims and Christians. Patriarch Gregory III Laham, the former leader of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church was born here on 15 December 1933 as ''Lutfy Laham''. Darayya Massacre
The Darayya massacre () was a massacre carried out by Syrian government forces of Bashar al-Assad that occurred between 20 and 25 August 2012 in the town of Darayya in the Rif Dimashq province of Syria, during the Syrian civil war. Background From the start of the conflict, the city of Darayya outside Damascus was one of the first hotspot for protesters against the government. The opposition in Darayya was one of the most pacifist in the country. When hundreds were arrested, locals took up arms. Two months before the massacre, the police and state intelligence had withdrawn from the town. Soon after, 3,000 fighters from the Free Syrian Army (FSA) made Darayya their stronghold. They held a strategic position, situated on the edge of the military airport at Mezze, which was being used for air-strikes against rebel-held areas. Ashrafiyat Sahnaya
Ashrafiyat Sahnaya (, also spelled Ashrafiah Sahnaya) is a city in southern Syria, administratively part of the Rif Dimashq Governorate, located southwest of Damascus. Nearby localities include Darayya to the north, Sahnaya to the south, and al-Sabinah to the east. According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics, the city had a population of 30,519 in the 2004 census. Civil war On 25 August 2013, fighting occurred between Syrian Army soldiers and opposition fighters in Ashrafiyat Sahnaya. At around 18:00, the rebels started to throw objects with a catapult. Around 20:00 an object was thrown at a group of five Syrian Army soldiers. The object landed 10–15 meters from them, and released a badly smelling gas. Sahnaya (, also spelled Sihnaya or Sehnaya) is a town in southern Syria, administratively part of the Rif Dimashq Governorate, located southwest of Damascus in the western Ghouta. Rif Dimashq Governorate (, lit. "Damascus Countryside Governorate" or "Damascus Suburb") is one of the fourteen governorates (provinces) of Syria. Gregory III Laham
Gregory III Laham, B.S. (; ; born Lutfy Laham, December 15, 1933, in Darayya, Syria), Emeritus Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, of Alexandria and Jerusalem, is the former spiritual leader of the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. He was elected on November 29, 2000, succeeding Patriarch Maximos V Hakim. He retired on May 6, 2017. He took the name Gregory in honor of Patriarch Gregory II Youssef, who was the last member of his religious order, the Basilian Salvatorian Order, to be elected Patriarch. Gregory III, who studied in Rome, Italy, and is multilingual, is also the author of several books on Eastern Catholic spirituality and theology. In addition, he served as the Spiritual Protector of the United Obediences (formerly the Paris and Malta Obediences until 2008) of the Order of Saint Lazarus. An internally displaced person (IDP) is someone who is forced to leave their home but who remains within their country's borders.
