Daraa Governorate
Daraa Governorate ( / ALA-LC: ') is one of the fourteen Governorates of Syria, governorates (provinces) of Syria. It is situated in the south-west of the country and covers an area of 2594 km2. It is bordered by Jordan to the south, Quneitra Governorate and Golan Heights to the west, Rif Dimashq Governorate to the north and As-Suwayda Governorate to the east. The governorate has a population of 922,000 (2010 estimate). The capital is the city of Daraa. Governorates Of Syria
Syria is a unitary state, but for administrative purposes, it is divided into fourteen governorates, also called provinces or counties in English (Arabic language, Arabic ''muḥāfaẓāt'', singular ''Muhafazah, muḥāfaẓah''). The governorates are divided into sixty-five Districts of Syria, districts (''manāṭiq'', singular ''Mintaqah, minṭaqah''), which are further divided into subdistricts (''nawāḥī'', singular ''Nahiyah, nāḥiyah''). The ''nawāḥī'' contain villages, which are the smallest administrative units. Each governorate is headed by a governor, appointed by the president, subject to cabinet approval. 2011 Syrian Protests
The Syrian revolution, also known as the Syrian Revolution of Dignity, was a series of mass protests and civilian uprisings throughout Syria – with a subsequent violent reaction by the Ba'athist regime – lasting from 15 March 2011 to 8 December 2024 as part of the greater Arab Spring in the Arab world. Tasil
Tasil (, also spelled Tsil) is a town in southern Syria, administratively part of the Izra District of the Daraa Governorate. Nearby localities include Nawa to the northeast, Adwan and al-Shaykh Saad to the east, Jalin and Tafas to the south, Saham al-Jawlan to the southwest and Saida and the Golan Heights to the west. According to the Syria Central Bureau of Statistics, Tasil had a population of 15,985 in the 2004 census. It is the administrative center of a ''nahiyah'' ("subdistrict") consisting of three localities with a combined population of 17,778 in 2004, all being Sunni Muslim. Southwestern Daraa Offensive (February 2017)
The Southwestern Daraa offensive (February 2017) was launched by an Islamic State affiliate, the Khalid ibn al-Walid Army, in the southwest of Syria near the Golan Heights and on the border with Israel and Jordan. The offensive In preparation for the offensive, the ISIL affiliate was secretly supplied with intelligence and ammunition by members of three rebel factions in exchange for money. Recruited ISIL supporters, which included municipal employees, women and children as young as 12, had also helped to smuggle weapons and materiel into the besieged ISIL enclave. Daraa Offensive (March–April 2016)
The Daraa offensive (March–April 2016) was a military operation of two groups allegedly affiliated with the Islamic State, the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade and the Islamic Muthanna Movement, against Syrian opposition forces in the Daraa Governorate. Background The Muthanna Islamic Movement was accused of kidnappings of Daraa officials and FSA commanders, which the Movement denied. Several of the prisoners were freed by the Yarmouk Army later. Muthanna was also alleged to have cooperated with the Islamic State. In midst of the Second Battle of Al-Shaykh Maskin on 23 January 2016, against the Syrian Armed Forces, conflict erupted between the Muthanna Movement and the Yarmouk Army after the Movement blocked the road leading to the town. Daraa Insurgency
The Daraa insurgency was a conflict waged against the Syrian government and allies by various anti-government forces in Daraa Governorate as part of the Syrian civil war. Insurgent activity began in late 2018, but drastically increased the following year. Over 1,200 attacks occurred in the year after June 2019, when the insurgency intensified. Tensions between reconciled rebels and the Syrian government would lead to heavy armed clashes between the two sides in 2020 and 2021. The conflict ended with the victory of government forces in 2021. The Daraa offensive (February–June 2017), code named as the battle of "Death Rather than Humiliation" () by the rebels, was a military operation launched by Syrian rebels against positions of the Syrian Arab Army in the Manshiyah District of Daraa city, in southern Syria, during the Syrian Civil War.
