Damara, Central African Republic
Damara is a town located in the Central African Republic prefecture of Ombella-M'Poko. It is located about an hour from the national capital, Bangui. History In March 2013, rebels from the Séléka Coalition (' means "alliance" in the Sango language) overtook a checkpoint in Damara. Part of the 2012-2013 Central African Republic conflict, the rebels claimed that President of the Central African Republic François Bozizé had violated the terms of a January cease-fire agreement. After storming the Damara checkpoint, however, the rebels were prevented from taking Bangui by a helicopter attack. "The helicopter opened fire on the column, forcing it to disperse... Ombella-M'Poko
Ombella-M'Poko is one of the 20 prefectures of the Central African Republic. Its capital is Boali since 10 December 2020, after the former capital Bimbo had to become part of Bangui Prefecture. In 2024, official estimates suggest the population reached 292,618 inhabitants. One important tourist attraction is the Waterfalls of Boali; however, due to the Boali dam, the falls only carry water on the weekends. Bangui (; or Bangî in Sango language, Sango, formerly written Bangi in English) is the Capital (political), capital and List of cities in the Central African Republic, largest city of the Central African Republic. It was established as a French Congo, French outpost in 1889 and named after its location on the northern bank of the Ubangi River (); the Ubangi itself was named from the Bobangi language, Bobangi word for the "rapids" located beside the settlement, which marked the end of navigable water north from Brazzaville. Sango Language
Sango (also spelled Sangho) is a major language spoken in Central Africa, especially the Central African Republic, southern Chad and Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is an official language in the Central African Republic, where it is used as a lingua franca across the country; though there are no statistics to quantify people who speak it as a first language versus a second tongue, almost everyone in CAR, estimated at 5,500,000 in 2025, speaks it (or are infants who will speak it) at some level. Sango is a language with contested classification, with some linguists considering it a Ngbandi-based creole, while others argue that the changes in Sango structures can be explained without a creolization process. It has many French loanwords, but its structure remains wholly Ngbandi. The Central African Republic Civil War is an ongoing civil war in the Central African Republic (CAR) involving the successive governments, rebels from the former ' coalition, the Anti-balaka militias, and various foreign and international forces. This article lists the heads of state of the Central African Republic. There have been seven heads of state of the Central African Republic and the Central African Empire since independence was obtained from the French on 13 August 1960. This list includes not only those persons who were sworn into office as President of the Central African Republic, but also those who served as ''de facto'' heads of state. Jean-Bédel Bokassa served as a ''de facto'' head of state (and also reigned as Emperor from 1976 to 1979), while David Dacko (who served as ''de facto'' head of state from 1979 to 1981), André Kolingba, Ange-Félix Patassé, and François Bozizé were elected into office at some point during their tenures. François Bozizé
François Bozizé Yangouvonda (born 14 October 1946) is a Central African Republic, Central African politician who was List of heads of state of the Central African Republic, President of the Central African Republic from 2003 to 2013. He was the only Central African Republic, Central African president born in modern-day Gabon. Bozizé rose to become a high-ranking army officer in the 1970s, under the rule of Jean-Bédel Bokassa. After Bokassa was ousted, Bozizé served in the government as Minister of Defense from 1979 to 1981 and as Minister of Information from 1981 to 1982. He participated in a failed 1982 Central African Republic coup attempt, 1982 coup attempt against President André Kolingba and subsequently fled the country.
