Dallas Creek Project
Ridgway Reservoir is a lake impounded by Ridgway Dam () on the Uncompahgre River north of the town of Ridgway in Ouray County, Colorado in the western United States. Ridgway Dam was built as part of the Dallas Creek Project. Construction began in 1978 and completed in 1987. The lake was first filled in 1990 as an aid to irrigation of the Uncompahgre Valley and flood control. Today recreation opportunities are provided at Ridgway State Park along the lake. Ouray County () is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 United States census, 2020 Census, the population was 4,874. The county seat is Ouray, Colorado, Ouray. Because of its rugged mountain topography, Ouray County is also known as the "Switzerland of America". History Ouray County was formed out of San Juan County, Colorado, San Juan County on January 18, 1877, making Ouray County the first county designated by the newly formed Colorado General Assembly. Ridgway Dam
Ridgway Dam is an earthen dam on the Uncompahgre River which impounds Ridgway Reservoir, located about 6 miles (10 km) north of the town of Ridgway in Ouray County, Colorado. The dam is high and long, with a capacity of of water. Ridgway Dam was built as part of the Dallas Creek Project. Construction began in 1978 and completed in 1987. Uncompahgre River
The Uncompahgre River is a tributary of the Gunnison River, approximately long, in southwestern Colorado in the United States. Lake Como at in northern San Juan County, in the Uncompahgre National Forest in the northwestern San Juan Mountains is the headwaters of the river. It flows northwest past Ouray, Ridgway, Montrose, and Olathe and joins the Gunnison at Confluence Park in Delta. The river forms Poughkeepsie Gulch and the Uncompahgre Gorge. The major tributaries are all creeks draining the northwest San Juan Mountains. There are two dams on the Uncompahgre River, a small diversion dam in the Uncompahgre Gorge, and Ridgway Dam below the town of Ridgway which forms Ridgway Reservoir. Ridgway, Colorado
The Town of Ridgway is a home rule municipality that is the most populous municipality in Ouray County, Colorado, United States. The town is a former railroad stop on the Uncompahgre River in the northern San Juan Mountains. The town population was 1,183 at the 2020 census. Steep forested mountains and cliffs surround Ridgway on the south, east, and northeast. The Uncompahgre River runs through the town and flows into the Ridgway State Park and Reservoir, to the north. Dallas Creek also flows from the south-west and forms a confluence with the Uncompahgre before entering the reservoir. Uncompahgre Valley
The Uncompahgre Valley is an agricultural valley of the Uncompahgre River around the town of Montrose in the western part of the U.S. state of Colorado. The valley is bounded to the south and east by the San Juan Mountains and to the west by the Uncompahgre Plateau. The valley contains about 135,000 acres of irrigable land, is 35 miles long, and approximately 12 miles wide. The Uncompahgre Valley was originally home to the Utes who were removed to Utah in 1881. Ridgway State Park
Ridgway State Park is a state park located in Ouray County, Colorado, United States. The park is 21 miles southeast of Montrose, 14 miles northeast of Ouray, 4 miles north of the town of Ridgway and 312 miles southwest of Denver. The wildlife consists of deer, mountain lions, coyotes, rabbits, and elk. Due to the park's variety of animal life, the park is used as a hunting ground although hunting opportunities are extremely limited due to proximity to developed areas. Facilities Three entrances to the park provide a range of options. Dallas Creek is a day-use only area, with facilities for picnicking, fishing in the summer, although it is not recommended.
