Daintree is a rural town and locality in the Shire of Douglas, Queensland, Australia. In the , the locality of Daintree had a population of 93 people. Geography Daintree is a settlement in North Queensland north of Cairns and from Port Douglas, Queensland. The McDowell Ranges are near the town while the Daintree River flows nearby. It takes its name from Richard Daintree, a pioneering geologist of British origin in North Queensland in the 1860s. It is within the local government area of Shire of Douglas (between 2008 and 2013, it was within the Cairns Region). At the 2006 census, Daintree and the surrounding area had a population of 78. Daintree River
The Daintree River is a river that rises in the Daintree Rainforest near Cape Tribulation in Far North Queensland, Australia. The river is located about northwest of Cairns in the UNESCO World Heritagelisted Wet Tropics of Queensland. The area is now primarily a tourist attraction. The river flows in highly meandering course generally north, then east, then south and then east, through the rainforest where the water is fresh. The Daintree Rainforest, also known as the Daintree, is a region on the northeastern coast of Queensland, Australia, about , by road, north of the city of Cairns. Daintree National Park
The Daintree National Park is located in Far North Queensland, Australia, northwest of Brisbane and northwest of Cairns. It was founded in 1981 and is part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland. In 1988, it became a World Heritage Site. The park consists of two sections—Mossman Gorge and Cape Tribulation, with a settled agricultural area between them which includes the towns of Mossman and Daintree Village. One entrance to Daintree National Park is located south of the Daintree River at Mossman Gorge where a visitor centre has been built from where tourists take a shuttle bus to the gorge, where they can take a walk or a refreshing swim. Richard Daintree
Richard Daintree CMG (13 December 1832 – 20 June 1878) was a pioneering Australian geologist and photographer. In particular, Daintree was the first Government geologist for North Queensland discovering gold fields and coal seams for future exploitation. Daintree was a pioneer in the use of photography during field trips and his photographs formed the basis of Queensland's contribution to the Exhibition of Arts and Industry in 1871. Following the success of the display, he was appointed as Queensland's Agent-General in London in 1872 but was forced to resign in 1876 due to ill-health and malpractice by some of his staff although not Daintree himself. A number of features in North Queensland have been named after Daintree including the town of Daintree, Queensland, the Daintree National Park, the Daintree River, the Daintree Rainforest which has been nominated for the World Heritage List and the Daintree Reef. John Dodson Daintree
Captain John Dodson Daintree, CBE (2January 186421September 1952) was a British Royal Navy officer, who served as Commissioner of Weihaiwei from 1901 to 1902, and as Inspector-General of the Coast Guard service after its formation in 1923. Naval career Daintree joined the Royal Navy in 1879, and was posted as a supernumerary naval cadet to , serving on the North America station. He was a sub-lieutenant when posted to for navigating duties in January 1886, and was promoted to lieutenant later the same year, on 2 October 1886. The following year, he was on 13 September 1887 posted to , in the Mediterranean Fleet, and a year later to in October 1888. Promoted to commander on 31 December 1899, he was in March 1900 transferred to the Royal Naval College, Greenwich, for Compass course, and the following month posted as a lieutenant for navigation to the HMS ''Amphitrite''. Daintree River Ferry
The Daintree River Ferry (or Daintree Ferry) is a cable ferry across the Daintree River between the localities of Forest Creek, Queensland, Forest Creek and Lower Daintree in the Shire of Douglas, Queensland, Australia. The ferry is situated some north of Port Douglas, and gives access to the northern section of the Daintree National Park and to Cape Tribulation. The ferry provides the only sealed road access to this area. The 43.2m ferry carries a maximum of 27 vehicles, and takes about 5 minutes to cross the river. It operates from early morning until midnight, seven days a week, with limited hours on Christmas Day. The ferry is operated by TNQ Transport Services, a subsidiary of Entrada Travel Group, on behalf of the Douglas Shire Council.
