Cyprus At The 2012 Summer Olympics
Republic of Cyprus competed at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, United Kingdom from 27 July to 12 August 2012. This was the nation's ninth consecutive appearance at the Olympics. Cyprus Olympic Committee sent the nation's smallest team ever to the Games since 1988. A total of 13 athletes, 9 men and 4 women, competed in 7 sports. Skeet shooter Georgios Achilleos became the first Cypriot athlete to participate in four Olympic games. Professional tennis player and one-time Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis, who did not compete in Beijing because of injury, was the nation's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. Cyprus left London with its first ever Olympic medal by sailor Pavlos Kontides, who won silver in the men's Laser event. The Cyprus Olympic Committee (COC) ( el, Κυπριακή Ολυμπιακή Επιτροπή) is National Olympic Committee representing the Republic of Cyprus. It is responsible for promoting the Olympic ideals on the island and for ensuring that Cyprus is represented with athletes at the Olympic Games and other multi-sport events. Members of the committee are 31 sports federations, which elect the Executive Council composed of the president and twelve members. The COC organized twice the Games of the Small States of Europe, in 1989 and in 2009. Eleni Artymata ( el, Ελένη Αρτυματά, born 16 May 1986 in Paralimni) is a track and field sprint athlete, who competes internationally for Cyprus. Biography Artymata represented Cyprus at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. She competed at the 200 metres, where she reached the second round. She won two medals, a gold in the 200 m and a bronze in the 100 m at the Mediterranean Games in Pescara. She also won two gold at the 2005 Games of the Small States of Europe. At the 2009 World Athletics Championships, she reached the final of the 200 metres, where she finished 8th. She recorded her personal best in the 200 m of 22.64 seconds in the semi-finals of the same event. At the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona. Anna Stylianou ( gr, Άννα Στυλιανού; born May 20, 1986) is a Cypriot swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. Stylianou made her official debut, as a 14-year-old, at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, where she placed forty-fourth overall in the women's 100 m freestyle, with a time of 59.08 seconds. Eight years after competing in her last Olympics, Stylianou qualified for her second Cypriot team, as a 22-year-old, at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The Women's skeet event at the 2012 Olympic Games took place on 29 July 2012 at the Royal Artillery Barracks. The event consisted of two rounds: a qualifier and a final.
