Cumbernauld, Kilsyth And Kirkintilloch East (UK Parliament Constituency)
Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East is a constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It was created for the 2005 general election, replacing Cumbernauld and Kilsyth and part of Strathkelvin and Bearsden. The constituency covers the north of the North Lanarkshire council area, and small eastern and northern part of the East Dunbartonshire council area. It is currently represented by Stuart McDonald of the Scottish National Party, who overturned a Labour majority of nearly 14,000 to take 59.9% of the vote in the May 2015 general election. With 38 letters (plus one comma and four spaces), Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East has the longest constituency name in the current Parliament. Kilsyth (; Scottish Gaelic ''Cill Saidhe'') is a town and civil parish in North Lanarkshire, roughly halfway between Glasgow and Stirling in Scotland. The estimated population is 9,860. The town is famous for the Battle of Kilsyth and the religious revivals of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The town now has links with Cumbernauld at one time being part of Cumbernauld and Kilsyth District Council. The towns also have the same members of parliament at Holyrood and Westminster. 2015 United Kingdom General Election
The 2015 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday, 7 May 2015 to elect 650 members to the House of Commons. It was the first and only general election held at the end of a Parliament under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011. Local elections took place in most areas on the same day. Polls and commentators had predicted the outcome would be too close to call and would result in a second consecutive hung parliament whose composition would be either similar to or more complicated than the 2010 general election. Opinion polls were eventually proven to have underestimated the Conservative vote as the party, having governed in coalition with the Liberal Democrats since 2010, won 330 seats and 36.9% of the vote share, giving them a small overall majority of 12 seats (including Speaker John Bercow—ten seats without him) and their first outright win since 1992. Gregg McClymont (born 3 June 1976) is a retirement expert, historian and former politician. He was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East from 2010 until 2015. Background and personal life Born and brought up in Cumbernauld, he attended Kildrum Primary School and Cumbernauld High School from 1981 until 1993. He read history at the University of Glasgow, graduating in 1997, the year when he was also chair of Scottish Labour Students, before winning the Thouron Scholarship to study at the University of Pennsylvania. Returning to Britain, he wrote a doctoral thesis in modern British history at St John's College, Oxford. Subsequently, he became a tutorial fellow at St Hugh's College, Oxford, where he taught until May 2010. The 2010 United Kingdom general election was held on Thursday 6 May 2010, with 45,597,461 registered voters entitled to vote to elect members to the House of Commons. The election took place in 650 constituencies across the United Kingdom under the first-past-the-post system. The election resulted in a large swing to the Conservative Party similar to that seen in 1979, the last time a Conservative opposition had ousted a Labour government. Rosemary McKenna
Rosemary McKenna ('' née'' Harvey; born 8 May 1941) is a Scottish Labour Party politician, who sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2010. She was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth at the 1997 general election, and held that seat until its abolition in boundary changes for the 2005 general election. She was then elected as the MP for the new Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East, from which she stood down at the next election, in 2010. Kirkintilloch East and North and Twechar is one of the seven wards used to elect members of the East Dunbartonshire Council. It elects three Councillors. The current entity was technically created in 2017 following a boundary review, but has largely the same boundaries as the 2007 ''Kirkintilloch East and Twechar'' ward, which as its name suggests encompassed the eastern parts of Kirkintilloch (neighbourhoods between the Forth and Clyde Canal and the Luggie Water, including Harestanes, Hillhead, Merkland and Waterside) and the separate village of Twechar further east, up to the boundary with Kilsyth and Cumbernauld in North Lanarkshire.
