Waimate District is a Districts of New Zealand, territorial authority district located in the Canterbury Region of the South Island of New Zealand. The main town is Waimate, while there are many smaller rural communities dispersed throughout the area. Its boundary to the south is the Waitaki River, to the west Lake Benmore and to the north-east the Pareora River. The district is administered by the Waimate District Council and regionally by the Canterbury Regional Council. John Coles, who was first elected as a councillor in 1994, was mayor from 2004 New Zealand local elections, 2004 to his retirement at the 2013 New Zealand local elections, 2013 local elections. George Dash
George Dash (1871 – 8 June 1959) was a New Zealand politician and coachbuilder who served twice as Mayor of Waimate, from 1917 to 1919 and from 1925 to 1941. Early life Dash was born in Essex in 1871 to John and Ann Dash. The family left England in October 1875, sailing on the '' Otaki'' until reaching Lyttelton, New Zealand in February 1876 and immediately settling down in Waimate. His father opened a business building coaches, which Dash eventually took over. Political career In August 1905, Dash announced his intent to contest the electorate at the 1905 general election. He was unsuccessful, coming second to the incumbent William Steward. In 1916, Dash was elected to the Waimate Borough Council. The next year he was elected mayor, defeating fellow councillor William Russell. During his first term as mayor he often clashed with his council, particularly councillor Robert Inkster, leading to eight councillors resigning in protest in March 1918 and forcing a by-election.
