Cooper Ornithological Club
The Cooper Ornithological Society (COS), formerly the Cooper Ornithological Club, was an American ornithological society. It was founded in 1893 in California and operated until 2016. Its name commemorated James Graham Cooper, an early California biologist. It published the ornithological journal '' The Condor'' and the monograph series ''Studies in Avian Biology'' (formerly ''Pacific Coast Avifauna''). It presented the annual Loye and Alden Miller Research Award, which is given for lifetime achievement in ornithological research and was a member of the Ornithological Council. The aims of the Cooper Ornithological Society were the scientific study of birds, the dissemination of ornithological knowledge, the encouragement and spread of interest in the study of birds, and the conservation of birds and wildlife in general. James Graham Cooper
James Graham Cooper (June 19, 1830 – July 19, 1902) was an American surgeon and naturalist. Cooper was born in New York. He worked for the California Geological Survey (1860–1874) with Josiah Dwight Whitney, William Henry Brewer and Henry Nicholas Bolander. He was primarily a zoologist, but he also made significant botanical collections from San Diego to Fort Mohave, Arizona in 1861. Cooper was active in the California Academy of Sciences, eventually becoming Director of the Museum. He obtained his medical degree in 1851 and practiced in New York City until 1853. Spencer F. Baird, the Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution at that time, helped Cooper work with the Pacific railroad survey parties working in the Washington Territory. ''Ornithological Applications'', formerly ''The Condor'' and ''The Condor: Ornithological Applications'', is a peer-reviewed quarterly scientific journal covering ornithology. It is an official journal of the American Ornithological Society. History The journal was first published in 1899 as the ''Bulletin of the Cooper Ornithological Club'' by a group of biologists in California. The journal's scope was regional, covering the western United States. In 1900, the name was changed to ''The Condor''. Monograph
A monograph is a specialist work of writing (in contrast to reference works) or exhibition on a single subject or an aspect of a subject, often by a single author or artist, and usually on a scholarly subject. Loye And Alden Miller Research Award
The Loye and Alden Miller Research Award, now known as the AOS Miller Award, was established in 1993 by the Cooper Ornithological Society (COS) to recognize lifetime achievement in ornithological research. The namesakes were Loye H. Miller and his son Alden H. Miller, both of whom focused largely on ornithology. Since the merger of the Cooper Ornithological Society with the American Ornithologists' Union to form the American Ornithological Society in 2016 the award has been presented by the latter. Ornithological Council
The Ornithological Council is an association of ornithology, ornithological organisations based in the Americas involved in bird study and conservation. It was established by Richard C. Banks and incorporated in Washington, D.C. in 1992 as a non-profit organization, nonprofit organization. Its original members comprised the American Ornithologists' Union, Association of Field Ornithologists, Colonial Waterbirds Society (now the Waterbird Society), Cooper Ornithological Society, Pacific Seabird Group, Raptor Research Foundation and Wilson Ornithological Society. Since then they have been joined by CIPAMEX, the Neotropical Ornithological Society, the Society of Canadian Ornithologists and the Society for the Conservation and Study of Caribbean Birds. The Bancroft Library
The Bancroft Library in the center of the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, is the university's primary special-collections library. It was acquired from its founder, Hubert Howe Bancroft, in 1905, with the proviso that it retain the name Bancroft Library in perpetuity. The collection at that time consisted of 50,000 volumes of materials on the history of California and the North American West. It is now the largest such collection in the world. The building the library is located in, the Doe Annex, was completed in 1950. Inception The Bancroft Library's inception dates back to 1859, when William H. Knight, who was then in Bancroft's service as editor of statistical works relative to the Pacific coast, was requested to clear the shelves around Bancroft's desk to receive every book in the store having reference to this country.
