The districts of Peru () are the third-level country subdivisions of Peru. They are subdivisions of the provinces of Peru, provinces, which in turn are subdivisions of the larger regions of Peru, regions or departments. There are 1,838 districts in total. Overview A 1982 law requires a minimum of residents in an area for a new district to be legally established: 3,500 if it is located in the rainforest, 4,000 in the Andes highlands and 10,000 in the Chala, coastal area. In the dry Andean area, many districts have less than 3,500 inhabitants due to low population density in the area. In some cases, their populations have decreased in comparison to the days when they were founded. Districts that are located at very high altitudes tend to be scarcely populated. UBIGEO
Ubigeo is the coding system for geographical locations ( Spanish: ''Código Ubicacíon Geográfica'') in Peru used by the National Statistics and Computing Institute ( Spanish: ''Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática'' INEI) to code the first-level administrative subdivision: regions ( Spanish: ''regiones'', singular: ''región''), the second-level administrative subdivision: provinces ( Spanish: ''provincias'', singular: ''provincia'') and the third-level administrative subdivision: districts ( Spanish: ''distritos'', singular: ''distrito''). There are 1874 different ubigeos in Peru. Syntax The coding system uses two-digit numbers for each level of subdivision. Cordillera Blanca
The Cordillera Blanca (Spanish for "white range") is a mountain range in Peru that is part of the larger Andes range and extends for between 8°08' and 9°58'S and 77°00' and 77°52'W, in a northwesterly direction. It includes several peaks over high and 722 individual glaciers. The highest mountain in Peru, Huascarán, at high, is located there. The Cordillera Blanca lies in the Ancash region and runs parallel to the Santa River valley (also called Callejón de Huaylas in its upper and midsections) on the west. Huascarán National Park, established in 1975, encompasses almost the entire range of the Cordillera Blanca. Snowmelt from the Cordillera Blanca provides part of northern Peru with its year-round water supply, while 5% of Peru's power comes from a hydro-electrical plant located in the Santa River valley. Kulyi Language
Culle, also spelled Culli, Cullí, or Kulyi, is a poorly attested extinct language of the Andean highlands of northern Peru. It is the original language of the highlands of La Libertad Region, the south of the Cajamarca Region ( Cajabamba), and the north of the Ancash region (Pallasca and Bolognesi). It is known through various word lists collected while the language was still spoken and through vocabulary loaned into the Spanish spoken in the region. Flores Reyna (1996) reports that Culli was spoken by at least one family in the town of Tauca, Pallasca Province, Ancash region, until the middle of the 20th century. While it appears that Culli has been displaced in its whole range by Spanish, the possibility of speakers remaining in some remote village cannot be ruled out altogether. The Instituto Nacional de Estadística e Informática (INEI) ("National Institute of Statistics and Informatics") is a semi-autonomous Peruvian government agency which coordinates, compiles, and evaluates statistical information for the country. Its current director is Renán Quispe Llanos. As stated on its website, the INEI eases decision-making with the help of quality statistical information and the use of information technology and thus helps develop the society. Censuses The latest census performed by the INEI is the 2017 Census, which was conducted from August 22 through November 5 of that year. Its preliminary results will be released to the public in 3 months, and final results in January 2018. An earlier census is the 2007 Census.
