The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited, also known as the CBC, or CBC Bank, was a bank based in Sydney, Australia. It was established in 1834, and in 1982 merged with the National Bank of Australasia to form National Australia Bank. History On 8 September 1834 the '' Sydney Herald'' carried a notice titled "The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney" proposing the establishment of a new bank. It began operations on 1 November 1834 and in 1848 was incorporated by an Act of the New South Wales Parliament. Sir Edward Knox was the first bank manager and later a director. Thomas Barker, a manufacturer, engineer, politician, landowner and philanthropist, was a notable director and chairman. William Rutledge (born 1806 - died 1876 Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia), merchant, banker and early settler, also became a director of the bank in 1839. The National Bank of Australasia was a bank based in Melbourne. It was established in 1858, and in 1982 merged with the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney to form National Australia Bank. History In 1858, Alexander Gibb, a Melbourne gentleman, enlisted Andrew Cruickshank, a local merchant and pastoralist, to raise the capital to establish National Bank of Australasia with headquarters in Melbourne. The legal work establishing the bank was performed by a predecessor of King & Wood Mallesons. Cruickshank became its first chairman while Gibb left after being passed over for the position of General Manager. The bank opened its first branch in South Australia the same year. ''The Cake Man'' is a 1975 play by Aboriginal Australian writer Bob Merritt, notable for being the first play written by an Indigenous Australian person to be published, televised and to tour out of Australia. A telemovie was made of a 1977 performance of the play. It was designed by Mansfield Bros and built by White and Coghill in 1880. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. CBC Bank Building is a heritage-listed bank building at 12 Jellore Street, Berrima, Wingecarribee Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It is also known as The First Bank and The Barn Gallery. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. History The land consisting of numbers 10, 12 and 14 Jellore Street was purchased by John Keighran of Campelltown in 1834 and 1835.
