Colletidae
The Colletidae are a family of bees, and are often referred to collectively as plasterer bees or polyester bees, due to the method of smoothing the walls of their nest cells with secretions applied with their mouthparts; these secretions dry into a cellophane-like lining. The five subfamilies, 54 genera, and over 2000 species are all (with the known exception of but one species, '' Amphylaeus morosus'') evidently solitary, though many nest in aggregations. Two of the subfamilies, Euryglossinae and Hylaeinae, lack the external pollen-carrying apparatus (the scopa) that otherwise characterizes most bees, and instead carry the pollen in their crops. ''Colletes similis'' is a species of plasterer bee belonging to the family Colletidae, subfamily Colletinae. Distribution This species is present in the Palearctic realm, including most of Europe and Northern Asia (excluding China). It can also be found in Near East, in North Africa. and in Argentina. Habitat These plasterer bee can be found on sandy soils, on coastal cliffs and dunes and on chalk grassland, meadows, hedge rows, moors, heaths and open woodland. Hesperocolletes
''Hesperocolletes douglasi'', the Rottnest bee or Douglas's broad-headed bee, is a rediscovered species of plasterer bee that is endemic to Australia, and the sole known member of the genus ''Hesperocolletes''. It was described from a single specimen collected in 1938 on Rottnest Island, located off the coast of Western Australia. A second specimen was found in 2015, in ''Banksia'' woodland at Pinjar, Western Australia. Description The bee's body is black, shiny and 12 mm long and wings were brown and up to 8 mm long. It is about the same size as a honeybee. It is generally black and brown and moderately hairy. ''Hesperocolletes douglasi'' is superficially like a number of other native bees and careful examination under a microscope would be required to distinguish a specimen.
