Clifford Kwan-Gett
Clifford Stanley Kwan-Gett is an Australian-born Chinese American engineer, physician, and artificial heart pioneer. Kwan-Gett was born as Clifford Gett in 1934 in Emmaville, New South Wales, a small tin mining town in the Australian bush. His father Walter Gett owned the Yow Sing & Co. General Store in Emmaville. Kwan-Gett was the eighth of ten children and the first in his family to attend college. At the University of Sydney, while a resident in Wesley College, he obtained degrees in Science and Engineering and later in Medicine. He married Joo Een Tan, then adopted his Chinese family name by changing his surname from Gett to Kwan-Gett. In 1966 Kwan-Gett went to the Cleveland Clinic to do artificial heart research as a fellow with Dr. Yuki Nose. In 1967 Kwan-Gett moved to Salt Lake City, Utah with Dr. Willem J. Emmaville, New South Wales
Emmaville is a town on the Northern Tablelands in the New England region of New South Wales, Australia. It is in the Glen Innes Severn Council district. Emmaville is at an elevation of 890 metres AHD. At the 2006 census, the Emmaville "urban centre/locality" had a population of 247 (in the 2001 census it was 303) and there were 535 persons usually resident in the Emmaville region. History Emmaville is located on the lands of the Ngarabal people, and the area remains of great significance to them today. The Ngarabal name for the land where the township is now located is "Marran", meaning "plenty of leeches". Tin was first discovered on Strathbogie Station in 1872 and the settlement was called ''Vegetable Creek'' after the Chinese market gardens which developed to service the mining population. Artificial Heart
An artificial heart is a device that replaces the heart. Artificial hearts are typically used to bridge the time to heart transplantation, or to permanently replace the heart in the case that a heart transplant (from a deceased human or, experimentally, from a deceased genetically engineered pig) is impossible. Although other similar inventions preceded it from the late 1940s, the first artificial heart to be successfully implanted in a human was the Jarvik-7 in 1982, designed by a team including Willem Johan Kolff, William DeVries and Robert Jarvik.
