was an American lawyer who served as dean of the University of Pennsylvania Law School. His parents were Joseph and Jane (Cuyler) Patterson. Patterson graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1860, and lived in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Chestnut Hill, in Philadelphia. During the American Civil War, in 1863 Patterson became a sergeant in Landis' First Battery of List of Pennsylvania Civil War units#Light Artillery, Philadelphia Light Artillery, and that year he was wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg.
