Chinook River (Washington)
The Chinook River is a short stream located near the mouth of the Columbia River in the U.S. state of Washington. Course The Chinook River originates just north of the Astoria–Megler Bridge, near Scarboro Hill in the Willapa Hills. The river flows west and northwest, just north of Fort Columbia State Park, Chinook Point, and the small town of Chinook on the Columbia River. Its lower course runs through the Chinook Wildlife Area. The river empties into Baker Bay, part of the Columbia River, at Stringtown, about east of Ilwaco. Cape Disappointment (Washington)
Cape Disappointment is a headland of the Pacific Northwest, located at the extreme southwestern corner of Washington, United States, on the north side of the Columbia River bar and just west of Baker Bay. The point of the cape is located on the Pacific Ocean in Washington's Pacific County, approximately two miles (3.2 km) southwest of the town of Ilwaco. Cape Disappointment sees about 2,552 hours of fog a year—the equivalent of 106 days—making it one of the foggiest places in the U.S. The cape was named on July 6, 1788, by British fur trader John Meares, who was sailing south from Nootka Island, Canada, in search of trade. He mistook the mouth of the Columbia River for a bay, which the ship could not enter due to a shallow shoal. Just missing the discovery of the river mentioned by Francisco Antonio Mourelle, he named them Cape Disappointment and Deception Bay. Columbia River Estuary
The Columbia River Estuary is situated on the Oregon–Washington border and the Pacific Coast of the United States. It was traditionally inhabited by the Chinook Native Americans and discovered by settlers in 1788. The Estuary plays host to a plethora of species of marine and terrestrial flora and fauna, and multiple conservation organisations exist that maintain the area. Ilwaco ( ) is a city in Pacific County, Washington, United States. The population was 936 at the 2010 census. Founded in 1890, the city was home to the Ilwaco Railway and Navigation Company along the Long Beach Peninsula, with its core economy based on logging and timber rafting. The city is located on the southern edge of the Long Beach Peninsula, on Baker Bay on the north side of the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is a department of the government of the state of Washington, United States of America. The WDFW manages over a million acres of land, the bulk of which is generally open to the public, and more than 500 water access sites. Many of the sites are termed "wildlife areas" and permit hunting during the hunting season, typically in the autumn and early winter for birds, but all year round for coyotes. Chinook is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pacific County, Washington, United States. The population was 457 at the 2000 census and increased to 466 at the 2010 census. History Chinook was the site of the first court in Pacific County in 1853, as well as the county's first salmon cannery in 1870. Chinook was once a wealthy town based on the salmon harvest.
