Chapel Of St. Mary Queen Of Peace
The St. Mary Queen of Peace Chapel ( es, Capilla de Santa María Reina de la Paz) is a Catholic chapel located in Villa Las Estrellas, in the Chilean Antarctic Territory (claimed by Chile), which includes in the commune of Antártica (commune), Antártica, within the Magallanes Region, Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, about 1580 km from Punta Arenas. It is one of List of Antarctic churches, eight churches on Antarctica. The chapel is basically a large container of metal, modified so that it resembles a common church, whose interior has electricity and a proper heating system. Religious ceremonies are performed by a deacon, who lives permanently in the villa. The chapel is relatively new, having opened in the late twentieth century. Currently the chapel is the southernmost Chilean Catholic church, and one of the southernmost of the planet. Villa Las Estrellas
Villa Las Estrellas (English: "The Stars Village") is a Chilean town and research station on King George Island within the Chilean Antarctic claim, the Chilean Antarctic Territory, and also within the Argentine and British Antarctic claims. The Chilean government considers it to be in the commune of Antártica, in the province of Antártica Chilena, in the región of Magallanes and Chilean Antartica. It is located on President Eduardo Frei Montalva Base, a research station. It is the larger one of only two civilian settlements on Antarctica (the other being Argentina's Esperanza Base). It has a summer population of 150 and a winter population of 80. Government The Office of the Civil Service Registry and Identification of Chile acts as official registry office with all the responsibilities inherent in this position.
