Chandler (occupation)
A chandlery was originally the office in a wealthy medieval household responsible for wax and candles, as well as the room in which the candles were kept. It could be headed by a chandler. The office was subordinated to the kitchen, and only existed as a separate office in larger households. Whether a separate office or not, the function was naturally an important one, in a time before electric light, and when production of candles was often done privately. It was closely connected with other offices of the household, such as the ewery and the scullery. While this usage is obsolete today, the term can refer to a candle business. The current meaning of "chandler" is a person who sells candles. By the 18th century, most commercial chandlers dealt in candles, oils, soap, and even paint. As these provided ships' stores, ''chandlery'' came to refer to a shop selling nautical items for ships and boats, although for a time they were called '' ship-chandleries'' to distinguish them. Chandler Highway
The Chandler Highway is a short road in the inner eastern suburbs of Melbourne. It runs from Heidelberg Road in Alphington, crosses the Yarra River, then continues across the Eastern Freeway, then terminates at an intersection with Princess Street and Earl Street. Its total length is less than 2 kilometres, leading to the claim that it is "the shortest highway in the world". It was named after a prominent local businessman and politician A. E. Chandler Air Force Station is a closed United States Air Force General Surveillance Radar station. It is south of Chandler, Minnesota, on the Buffalo Ridge in section 13 of Moulton Township, Murray County. It was closed in 1969. History In late 1951 Air Defense Command selected the site as one of 28 radar stations built as part of the second segment of the permanent radar surveillance network. Prompted by the start of the Korean War, on July 11, 1950, the Secretary of the Air Force asked the Secretary of Defense for approval to expedite construction of the second segment of the permanent network. Receiving the Defense Secretary's approval on July 21, the Air Force directed the Corps of Engineers to proceed with construction. Chandler Township is a civil township of Charlevoix County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 248 at the 2010 census. Communities * Dot is a historic settlement located within the township. A post office operated here from May 17, 1880 until June 15, 1901. *Spring Vale is a former lumbering community in the southeastern portion of the township near the county line with Cheboygan County. The community began in 1879 by the dominant Cadillac lumber firm Cobbs & Mitchell, owned by Johnathon Cobbs and George A. Mitchell. A post office named Spring Vale opened on May 6, 1879 with George Mohorter serving as the first postmaster, who operated the post office from his general store. Chandler is a town straddling Ohio and Boon Township in Warrick County, Indiana, United States, located just east of Evansville, Indiana along the Ohio River. The population was 3,693 at the 2020 census, making it Warrick County's second-most populous municipality after Boonville. The town is part of the Evansville metropolitan area with a population of 342,815. History In 1847, the area which is now Chandler opened a post office named Lee to serve its residents. By that time, a portion of the Central Canal (a piece of the Wabash and Erie Canal) was completed just outside of town that connected nearby Evansville with present-day Worthington. The canal system was never fully completed, having met its doom with financial problems and competition from the railroad boom, but part of the canal remains today along with the old tow path, aptly named Tow Path Road.
