There are over 300,000 Catholics living in Iraq, just 0.95% of the total population. The Catholics of Iraq follow several different rites, but most are members of the Chaldean Catholic Church. There are 17 currently active dioceses and eparchies in Iraq. In 2019, the Archbishop of Erbil, in Kuridstan, warned that Catholicism and Christianity in general was in danger of becoming 'extinct' in Iraq due to persistent persecution from militant Islamic groups such as Daesh. The Chaldean Catholic Archeparchy (or Archdiocese) of Baghdad is the Metropolitan, proper Archeparchy of the Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Babylon, with cathedral see in the Iraqi capital Baghdad. As the Patriarch is its Metropolitan Archeparch, it has no other Ordinary of its own. Chaldean Catholic Diocese of Zakho is a diocese of the Chaldean Church in the second half of the 19th century and for most of the 20th century. The diocese of Zakho was merged with the Chaldean diocese of Amadiya in 1987. In December 2001, a new bishop was consecrated. In July 2013, Zakho was suppressed to the Diocese of Amadiyah.
