Carrie (mango)
The 'Carrie' mango is a named mango cultivar that originated in south Florida, USA. History The original tree was grown on the property of Laurence H. Zill in Boynton Beach, Florida and was reportedly a seedling of the ' Sophie Fry' mango. A pedigree analysis of the Florida mangoes conducted in 2005 that did not include Sophie Fry instead the study found Julie to be the most likely parent, though Julie is also the parent of Sophie Fry. The Carrie tree was named after Lawrence Zill's mother, Carrie Zill. It first fruited in 1940 and commercial propagation began in 1949. Thereafter Carrie gained a reputation for having excellent eating qualities and good disease resistance. Its commercial application was limited due to the fruit's lack of color and soft flesh, but it became a popular dooryard variety in Florida. Fruit And Spice Park
The Fruit & Spice Park, formally known as the Preston B. Bird/Mary Heinlein Fruit & Spice Park, is a 37-acre park located in the heart of Redland, Florida, and is the only botanical garden of its kind in the United States. History The origins of Julie are uncertain but recent genetic studies show that it possibly descended from cultivars introduced to the Caribbean through Jamaica and Trinidad from Réunion, although its monoembryonic trait suggests it is descended from the Indian line of mangoes. Julie was recognized for its outstanding flavor and dwarf growth habit. Sophie Fry is perhaps best known for reportedly being the parent of the 'Carrie' mango, which became one of the more popular dooryard cultivars sold in Florida. A 2005 pedigree analysis disputed this, estimating 'Julie' was the likely parent of Carrie; however the analysis did not include Sophie Fry in the study, which could explain the discrepancy.
