Captains Of The Rehoboth Baster
The Captains of the Rehoboth Baster (Afrikaans: ''Kapteins van die Rehoboth Baster'') were the traditional leaders of the indigenous Baster community in central Namibia, until the dissolution of the Rehoboth Homeland in 1990, upon Namibian independence. The 1990 Constitution of Namibia does not give the same special rights to the Rehoboth Baster as the other traditional leaderships of Namibia. The Baster Council, and the Rehoboth population, still elect a Captain today, but this has no autonomy or powers associated with it, like the other traditional leaderships under the Namibian constitution. History The first Captain (''Kaptein'') was Hermanus van Wyk, who led the Baster nation to Rehoboth in German South West Africa from the Northern Cape of South Africa to escape the rampant racial discrimination. Cornelius Van Wyk
Cornelius van Wyk (died 24 April 1924) was the second Captain of the Rehoboth Baster, serving from 1914 until his death in 1924. Life and death Van Wyk succeeded his father, Hermanus, upon his death in 1905. However, the German colonial government abolished the role of the Baster Captain, replaced instead by a Council of Basters (''Basterrat''). In 1915, the Basters, whom had signed a protection agreement with the German Empire almost thirty years prior, rebelled against the military force in German South West Africa. Van Wyk had previously met with Union of South Africa Prime Minister Louis Botha, to seek conflict resolution, but to no avail. The rebellion finally ended after van Wyk's wife and children, among others, were killed in the Battle of Sam Khubis. Politics of Namibia takes place in a framework of a semi-presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Namibia is both head of state and head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by both the president and the government. Legislative power is vested in the two chambers of Parliament. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature. Additional to the government political structure Namibia has a network of traditional leadership with currently 51 recognised traditional authorities and their leaders. Johannes Gerard Adolph Diergaardt, more commonly known as Hans Diergaardt (16 September 1927 – 13 February 1998) was a Namibian politician active for nearly a decade after Namibia gained independence. Prior to that, he was elected as the fifth Kaptein of the then-autonomous Baster community at Rehoboth, succeeding Dr. Ben Africa in 1979 after winning a court challenge to the disputed election of 1976. Both before and after independence, Diergaardt founded several local political parties, among them the Federal Convention of Namibia. He represented this party as a member of the Constituent Assembly of Namibia, convened to draft the constitution for the new nation of Namibia. Diergaardt is known for his criticism of black-majority rule in the early years of independent Namibia. The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization, or simply UNPO is an international organization established to facilitate the voices of unrepresented and marginalised nations and peoples worldwide. John McNab
John McNab (1934/1935 - 3 October 2020) was a Namibian politician who served as Rehoboth, Namibia, Rehoboth Baster captain from 1999 until 2020. Life and death John McNab was born around the Rehoboth, Namibia, Rehoboth area of South West Africa in 1934 or 1935. His grandfather was of Scottish descent, and was murdered in Waterberg Plateau Park, Waterberg in 1880. In 1971, McNab co-founded the Rehoboth Baster Association (RBA), alongside Ben Africa and Piet Junius. McNab remained with the RBA before leaving in 1977 to establish the Rehoboth Democratic Movement. McNab was elected as Baster captain on 11 January 1999, with 40.8% of the vote, succeeding Hans Diergaardt. McNab signed the Rehoboth Baster community into the membership of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) on 17 May 2008. Dap Izaaks
David Jacobus "Dap" Izaaks (1932/1933–2005), also known as ''Oom Dap'', was a Namibian Baster politician who served as Captains of the Rehoboth Baster, Acting Captain of the Rehoboth Baster between February 1998 and January 1999. He also served as Mayor of Rehoboth, Namibia, Rehoboth. Life and death In 1968, Izaaks founded the Rehoboth People's Party. He was interim Baster Captain, after the death of Johannes Diergaardt, from 12 February 1998 to 11 January 1999. Izaaks lost the 1999 election as Baster Captain to John McNab. Izaaks received 17.6 per cent of the vote. Izaaks died on 21 October 2005, after a road traffic collision in Windhoek.
