The Captain Cook Stakes is a Group 1 Thoroughbred horse race run at weight-for-age over a distance of 1,600 metres (1 mile) at Trentham Racecourse in Wellington, New Zealand. Trentham Racecourse
Trentham Racecourse is the main thoroughbred horse racecourse for the Wellington city area in New Zealand. It is located in the suburb of Trentham in Upper Hutt, next to Trentham Military Camp. The races are conducted by the Wellington Racing Club. The first race meeting was held there in January 1906. In November 2022 it was reported that a $12.4 million investment from the New Zealand Government's Infrastructure Acceleration Fund would be used in a new 850 home housing development and shopping centre on Trentham Racecourse land. Opie Bosson
Owen Patrick Bosson (born 24 July 1980), known by his short name Opie Bosson, is a jockey in Thoroughbred racing in New Zealand. Riding career Bosson started as an apprentice for Stephen Autridge, his godfather. He began his race-day riding career as a 15 year old on the 25 October 1995 with Comette at Dargaville and soon after had his first win on Fairlie Airlie at Gisborne. Sir Slick (foaled 2001) is a bay gelding Thoroughbred racehorse by Volksraad from the Paris Opera mare Miss Opera. The New Zealand bred Sir Slick was the winner of Six Group One races in New Zealand and he also raced in Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. Seachange (foaled 14 November 2002) is a top New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse. She won a record seven Group I races in New Zealand. Her regular rider in New Zealand was Gavin McKeon. Racing career Seachange began racing in September 2005, as a 3yo, and won her first start at Paeroa by half a length. Ekraar
Ekraar (foaled February 13, 1997) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse. Racing career Ekraar was sired by Red Ransom, who was standing stud in the United States at the time. His dam was Sacahuista, who won the 1987 Breeders' Cup Distaff race. Ekraar made his debut at a maiden race held at the Newmarket Racecourse in England on July 6, 1999, of which he finished at second place behind Race Leader. From there, he won the 1999 Vintage Stakes. His next victory wouldn't come until the following year when he won 3 consecutive races, two of which were graded races ( Rose of Lancaster and Select). Murray Baker
Murray Baker (born 21 April 1946) is a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse trainer and former New Zealand cricketer. Cricket Baker played in one List A and seventeen first-class matches for Central Districts and Northern Districts from 1966 to 1975. Baker was part of the team who won the Plunket Shield and played for Huddersfield in England. Horse training Baker started training at Woodville in the 1970s. His first raceday winner was Vizier on October 4 1978, at Otaki. Another early winner was Sir Vigilant in the 1985 New Zealand St. Leger. In 2000 Murray moved his training operation to Cambridge. Lisa Joy Allpress (née Mumby; born 1974 or 1975) is a New Zealand jockey. She was the first female jockey in New Zealand to reach 1000 wins. Allpress was born in 1974 or 1975. She was apprenticed to trainer Kevin Gray at Waverley. Her first race ride was on Miss Molly in a maiden at Matamata on 23 October 2002. She recorded her first win the next day on Rosafe at Wanganui. Her first Group Win was on We Can Say It Now in the Captain Cook Stakes at Trentham on 4 December 2010. , Allpress has also ridden successfully in Singapore (57), Japan (7 wins) and Malaysia (12). Starcraft (21 October 2000 - 3 November 2022) was a New Zealand-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who came to international attention when he won the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Newmarket in England in September 2005. Pentire (12 April 1992 – 20 November 2017) was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Background Pentire was bred by Lord Halifax, he was purchased for 54,000 guineas by Mollers Racing, the racing stable Trust of brothers Eric and Budgie Moller. Racing career Trained by Geoff Wragg, at age two Pentire's best result in a conditions race was a third in the Richmond Stakes. At age three in 1995, the colt had an outstanding year that included twice beating the brilliant runner, Singspiel. Mufhasa (horse)
Mufhasa (foaled 7 September 2004), was a New Zealand Thoroughbred racehorse who won a number of Group races in New Zealand and Australia in a career stretching from 2007 to 2013. He was known as King Mufhasa in Australia. Mufhasa was trained by Stephen McKee and ridden in the majority of his races by Samantha Spratt. Towards the end of his career he was trained by Bruce Wallace and he was cared for throughout his career by strapper Amy Doran. His win in the 2012 Windsor Park Plate was his tenth and final Group 1 victory. Mufhasa was voted the New Zealand Horse of the Year for the 2009 and 2012 seasons. Chris Johnson, also known as "CWJ" or "The Magic Man", is a jockey in Thoroughbred racing in New Zealand. He is most notable for holding the national record for winning rides in New Zealand and for winning the New Zealand jockeys premiership twice. Riding career Chris Johnson was apprenticed to Woodville trainer Scott Hammersley. His first winner, Noble Star trained by Hammersley, was in his first raceday ride at Tauherenikau on New Year's Day 1981. Johnson won the New Zealand Premierships in the 1995–96 season with 139 wins and the 2017–18 season with 112 wins.
