The Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo (Spanish for Argentine Open Polo Championship) is an international polo championship at club level, organised every year since 1893 at the Campo Argentino de Polo of Palermo, Buenos Aires. It was known as the "River Plate Polo Championship" between 1893-1923, and as well as the other two main polo events in Argentina (the Campeonato Abierto de Hurlingham at the Hurlingham Club and the Campeonato Abierto del Tortugas Country Club), the handicap of the teams must be between 28 and 40 goals. It is organized by the Asociación Argentina de Polo (Argentine Polo Association). In 1975, Coronel Suárez became the first team in history to play in the tournament with a maximum handicap of 40 goals. Argentine Polo Association
The Argentine Polo Association ( es, Asociación Argentina de Polo, AAP) is the guiding entity of the game of Polo in the Argentina. It is a non-profit association constituted on September 14, 1922 in Buenos Aires. Before its creation the Polo Association of the River Plate (the P.A.R.P) was the governing body for polo in Argentina. However in 1921, a group of players formed the Argentine Polo Federation with the intent on sending teams abroad to compete internationally, an idea opposed by the P.A.R.P. When the teams sent to England and the United States by the Argentine Polo Federation were successful, it appeared that clubs and players would defect from the P.A.R.P. to join the Federation. The P.A.R.P. agreed to negotiations in 1922. Johnny Traill
John Arthur Edward Traill (1882–1958) was the first Irish–Argentine 10-goal polo player. He was born in 1882. He married Henrietta Margaret, from Scotland, and they had children John and James. Traill owned a ranch in Argentina and imported polo ponies for the Roehampton Club, training them in Richmond Park. He was also a coach at Ham Polo Club when it was revived by Billy Walsh. His name appears as winner of the Roehampton Trophy several times, alongside teammates such as the Marquess of Villavieja, Jack Nelson and Major Philip Magor. Captain Charles Thomas Irvine "Pat" Roark (1895–1939) was an English polo player. He held a ten goal handicap at the peak of his career. Biography Early life He was born in Ireland on 2 May 1895. His father was Thomas Irvine Roark of Wexford. He was commissioned into the Royal Irish Rifles in October 1914, transferred to the Household Cavalry in June 1917 and served in France in 1917 with the Life Guards, after which he transferred to the Indian Army and the 34th P.A.V.O. Stewart Birrell Iglehart (February 22, 1910 – December 19,1993) was a rancher, ice hockey and polo player. He was born in Valparaíso, Chile but moved to the United States at a young age. As a child he learned to play both ice hockey and polo. While in prep school he was offered a professional ice hockey contract but declined. Following prep school he attended Yale University, where he continued to play ice hockey and polo. He became one of the best defensemen in college hockey and was selected to play in two different Winter Olympics. Iglehart did not attend either. In 1933 he played for Team USA at the World Ice Hockey Championships, winning a gold medal. Following the tournament he continued to play amateur hockey, but quit to concentrate on polo.
