Henry Calvin
Henry Calvin (born Wimberly Calvin Goodman; May 25, 1918 – October 6, 1975) was an American actor known for his role as the Spanish soldier Sergeant Demetrio Lopez Garcia on Walt Disney's live-action television series ''Zorro'' (1957–1959). Early life Born in Dallas, Texas, he sang in the choir of his local Baptist church as a child; he was often the featured soloist. Calvin attended Winnetka Grade School during his childhood. After graduating from Sunset High School in Dallas, Texas, he attended Southern Methodist University before pursuing a career as an actor and singer. Career Calvin hosted a 1950 NBC radio show and appeared on Broadway (most notably in '' Kismet'' as the Wazir of Police). Hiram Augustus Calvin
Hiram Augustus Calvin (April 6, 1841 – January 13, 1932) was a businessman and political figure in Ontario, Canada. He represented Frontenac as an Independent Conservative from 1892 to 1896 and as a Conservative from 1900 to 1904. He was born on Garden Island, Canada West, the son of Delino Dexter Calvin and Marion Breck, and was educated there, at the Woodstock Literary Institute and at Queen's University. Calvin joined his father's business and later succeeded him as lumber merchant, ship builder and forwarder. He also helped establish the Kingston Foundry and Machinery Company. In 1879, he married Annie W. Marsh. He served as reeve for Garden Island from 1884 to 1892. John Calvin
John Calvin (; frm, Jehan Cauvin; french: link=no, Jean Calvin ; 10 July 150927 May 1564) was a French theologian, pastor and reformer in Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism, including its doctrines of predestination and of God's absolute sovereignty in the salvation of the human soul from death and eternal damnation. Calvinist doctrines were influenced by and elaborated upon the Augustinian and other Christian traditions. Various Congregational, Reformed and Presbyterian churches, which look to Calvin as the chief expositor of their beliefs, have spread throughout the world. Idelette Calvin
Idelette Stordeur de Bure Calvin (born 1500, died 1549) was the wife of the French reformer John Calvin (Jean Cauvin). Life Idelette de Bure was born in Liège and first married John Stordeur from the same city. At some stage they moved to Strassburg where they were recorded as being Anabaptists. Idelette and John Stordeur had two children (Charles, Judith) before Stordeur died after a brief illness, leaving Idelette a widow. Calvin was so caught up in his labors that he did not seem to consider marriage until age 30 or so. He asked friends to help him find a woman who was "chaste, obliging, not fastidious, economical, patient, and careful for (his) health". His fellow laborer Martin Bucer had known Idelette and recommended her to Calvin in confidence that she would fit the bill. They married in August 1540. Katherine Calvin is an earth scientist at the Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI). She researches human use of global resources using Earth modeling systems at JGCRI under the direction of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) and the University of Maryland. She has contributed to the third US National Climate Assessment as well as two special reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Education Calvin attended the University of Maryland from 1999 to 2003 where she earned bachelor's degrees in computer science and mathematics. She then attended Stanford University where she earned her master's degree and PhD in management science and engineering. Melvin Ellis Calvin (April 8, 1912 – January 8, 1997) was an American biochemist known for discovering the Calvin cycle along with Andrew Benson and James Bassham, for which he was awarded the 1961 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He spent most of his five-decade career at the University of California, Berkeley. Samuel Calvin
Samuel Calvin (July 30, 1811 – March 12, 1890) was a Whig Party (United States), Whig member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania. Biography Samuel Calvin was born in Washingtonville, Pennsylvania. He attended the common schools and Milton Academy. He taught in Huntingdon Academy, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1836 and commenced practice in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Calvin was elected as a Whig to the 31st United States Congress, Thirty-first Congress. He declined to be a candidate for renomination in United States House election, 1850, 1850. He resumed the practice of law and served as director of the Hollidaysburg School Board for thirty years. He was a member of the State revenue board and a member of the State constitutional convention in 1873. Samuel Calvin (geologist)
Samuel Calvin (February 2, 1840 – April 17, 1911) was Iowa's first systematic Geology of Iowa, geologist, helping to make the first bedrock and landform maps of Iowa, as well as leading geological research throughout the state. He was born in Scotland, attended Lenox College (now defunct) in Hopkinton, Iowa, where he later taught. One of his collaborators was Thomas Huston Macbride, the notable Iowa naturalist. Calvin became a University of Iowa professor in 1873 and the Iowa State Geologist in 1892, and led the Iowa Geological Survey from 1892 until his death. Calvin documented the Devonian and Pre-Illinoian, Aftonian beds of Iowa, and was an expert on Pleistocene fauna. He was a founder of the ''American Geologist'' journal. Calvin Hall at the University of Iowa is named for him. His photographic collection of Iowa scenes is an important collection for historians and geologists.
