Cabinet Of Nauru
The Cabinet of Nauru is the executive branch of the government of the Republic of Nauru, a small island nation in the Pacific Ocean. Article 17 (1.) of the Constitution of Nauru provides for the "executive authority of Nauru" to be vested in "a Cabinet constituted as provided by this Part" with the "general direction and control of the government of Nauru", specified in Article 17 (2.) as being "collectively responsible" to the Parliament of Nauru. The Cabinet is directly appointed by the President of Nauru, and comprises the president, who presides over meetings over the Cabinet, and either four or five members of the parliament. The president is also responsible for assigning Members of the Cabinet, including himself, "responsibility for any business of the government of Nauru", as ministers. Aaron Stein Cook is a Nauruan politician. Career Cook unsuccessfully ran to represent the Aiwo Constituency in the parliament of Nauru in 2008, as well as April and June 2010. In 2009, Cook was elected as president of the Nauru Weightlifting Federation. Cook was first elected to parliament in 2013 election, where he unseated Parliament Speaker Godfrey Thoma. Valdon Kape Dowiyogo (31 August 1968 – 8 December 2016) was a political figure and cabinet minister from the Pacific nation of the Republic of Nauru. Family and political background His father, Bernard Dowiyogo, served as President of Nauru on seven occasions between 1976 and 2003. His brother, Jesaulenko Dowiyogo, is also pursuing a political career. Valdon Dowiyogo stood for the Parliament of Nauru for the constituency of Ubenide and was duly elected. David Waiau Adeang (born 24 November 1969) is a Nauruan politician, former Speaker of the Parliament of Nauru, and Nauru's Minister of Finance and Justice, as well as the Minister Assisting the President of Nauru. He is a founding member of the Naoero Amo (Nauru First Party), currently the only successful political party on the island. 2016 Nauruan General Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Nauru on 9 July 2016. On 10 June 2016, the Parliament was dissolved by President Baron Waqa after it completed its three-year term. Speaker Ludwig Scotty called the elections for 9 July, with nominations taking place between 19 and 25 June 2016. Electoral system The 19 members of Parliament were elected from eight multi-member constituencies using the Dowdall system, a version of ranked voting; voters ranked candidates, with the votes counted as a fraction of 1 divided by the ranking number (e.g. a candidate ranked second will be scored as ½); the candidates with the highest total are elected. Baron Divavesi Waqa (; born 31 December 1959) is a Nauruan politician who was the 14th President of Nauru from 11 June 2013 until 27 August 2019. He previously served as Minister of Education from 2004 to 2007. Political role Waqa was elected in the May 2003 elections to the Parliament of Nauru, representing the constituency of Boe. Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust
The Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust (NPRT) was a sovereign wealth fund developed by the government of the Republic of Nauru in which the government invested money from the state-owned mining company, Nauru Phosphate Corporation. This money was then re-invested in a real estate portfolio, among other things, to provide the government with a reliable national income following the depletion of minable phosphates on the island. Although at one time successful, mismanagement and corruption later essentially bankrupted the fund, thus virtually bankrupting the entire Republic. Responsibility for the Trust rests with the Ministry for the Nauru Phosphate Royalties Trust, a Cabinet position.
