Watford
Watford () is a town and non-metropolitan district with Borough status in the United Kingdom, borough status in Hertfordshire, England, northwest of Central London, on the banks of the River Colne, Hertfordshire, River Colne. Initially a small market town, the Grand Junction Canal encouraged the construction of paper-making mills, print works, and brewery, breweries. While industry has declined in Watford, its location near London and transport links have attracted several companies to site their headquarters in the town. Cassiobury Park is a public park that was once the manor estate of the Earls of Essex. The town developed next to the River Colne on land belonging to St Albans Abbey. In the 12th century, a charter was granted allowing a market, and the building of St Mary's Church, Watford, St Mary's Church began. Watford is a UK parliamentary constituency represented in the House of Commons since 2024 by Matt Turmaine, a member of the Labour Party. Constituency profile The constituency comprises the whole of the Borough of Watford, together with five wards from Three Rivers District. Two of the Three Rivers wards, Carpenders Park and Oxhey Hall, are to the south of Watford town and include mostly prosperous, elevated, commuter villages. Matt Turmaine
Matthew Robert Turmaine (born 1969) is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Watford since the 2024 general election. He was previously the Watford Borough Councillor for Holywell ward from 2012 until 2025. Early life and education Turmaine was born in 1969 at Amersham Hospital in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. His father was a compositor and his mother was a dressmaker. Turmaine attended St Clement Danes School in Chorleywood and spent much of his childhood in Watford, before moving there permanently in 2011. In his 20s, he travelled around the United States, where he visited almost every state and slept rough in Los Angeles. Atria Watford
Atria Watford is a shopping centre in the middle of Watford, Hertfordshire, England. It opened in June 1992 as the Harlequin Shopping Centre. The centre was rebranded as intu Watford in 2013 following the renaming of its parent Capital Shopping Centres Group as Intu Properties. It received its current name in March 2021 by the new owners, Global Mutual. Atria Watford is scheduled to be renamed back to the Harlequin in Summer 2025. The building is glass roofed with symmetrical malls. The anchor stores of the centre were branches of John Lewis (known as Trewins until rebranding in 2001) and Debenhams, until their closure in 2020. Peter Taylor (mayor)
Peter Colin Taylor (born April 1980) is a British Liberal Democrat politician who is the second Mayor of Watford. He was elected in the 2018 election, succeeding Dorothy Thornhill. He was re-elected as mayor in 2022. Taylor has also served as the Hertfordshire County Councillor for Central Watford and Oxhey since 2025. He was a Watford Borough Councillor for Oxhey ward from 2012 to 2018, when he was elected Mayor. Early life and career Taylor was born in Preston in April 1980. His father was a computer systems programmer for Midland Bank (now HSBC) and his mother was a childminder. He has three siblings. Watford Borough Council is the local authority for the Watford non-metropolitan district in the south-west of Hertfordshire, England. The council is based in the Town Hall on Hempstead Road. Watford Town Hall is a municipal building in Rickmansworth Road, Watford, England. It is a Grade II listed building. History In the early 20th century Watford Urban District Council operated from municipal offices at Upton House in The Parade. The council sought a proper town hall after it achieved municipal borough status in 1922. The site proposed for the new building in Rickmansworth Road had previously been occupied by an old mansion known as "The Elms". The foundation stone for the new building was laid by Rigby Taylor, the Mayor, in 1938. The new building, which was designed by Charles Cowles-Voysey in the Neo-Georgian style, was completed in 1939. It was officially opened by the Countess of Clarendon on 5 January 1940. Walford
Walford is a fictional borough of East London in the BBC soap opera ''EastEnders''. It is the primary setting for the soap. ''EastEnders'' is filmed at Borehamwood in Hertfordshire, towards the north-west of London. Much of the location work is filmed in nearby Watford, which was chosen for many of the exterior scenes due to its close proximity and the town's name being so similar to Walford. Thus, any stray road signs or advertising boards which are accidentally filmed in the back of shots will appear to read Walford.
