The history of Azerbaijan (Iran), Azerbaijan, being the historical region of northwestern Iran, spans thousands of years. Antiquity Early antiquity During the Iron Age, the western part of modern-day Azerbaijan was populated by Urartians. From around the 10th to the 7th centuries BCE, Mannaea was an ancient kingdom located in northwestern Iran, south of Lake Urmia. According to Ran Zadok, The Mannaeans were eventually assimilated by Matiene, which became a satrapy of the Median Empire in about 609 BCE until the Persian conquest, when along with tribes of Saspires and Alaradians (remnants of Urartians) it became a part of the XVIII satrapy of the Achaemenid Empire. Azerbaijan or Azarbaijan (, , ), also known as Iranian Azerbaijan, is a historical region in northwestern Iran that borders Iraq and Turkey to the west and Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the Azerbaijani exclave of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic to the north. Iranian Azerbaijan includes three northwestern Iranian provinces: West Azerbaijan province, West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan province, East Azerbaijan and Ardabil province, Ardabil.
