High-speed Rail In Japan
The , colloquially known in English as the bullet train, is a network of high-speed railway lines in Japan. It was initially built to connect distant Japanese regions with Tokyo, the capital, to aid economic growth and development. Beyond long-distance travel, some sections around the List of metropolitan areas in Japan, largest metropolitan areas are used as a commuter rail network. It is owned by the Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency and operated by five Japan Railways Group companies. Starting with the Tokaido Shinkansen () in 1964, the network has expanded to consist of of lines with maximum speeds of , of Mini-shinkansen lines with a maximum speed of , and of spur lines with Shinkansen services. The network links most major cities on the islands of Honshu and Kyushu, and connects to Hakodate on the northern island of Hokkaido. Hakodate
is a Cities of Japan, city and seaports of Japan, port located in Oshima Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It is the capital city of Oshima Subprefecture. As of January 31, 2024, the city had an estimated population of 239,813 with 138,807 households, and a population density of . The total area is . The city is the third largest in Hokkaido after Sapporo and Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Asahikawa. History Hakodate was Japan's first city whose port was opened to foreign trade in 1854, as a result of Convention of Kanagawa, and used to be the most important port in northern Japan. The city was the biggest city in Hokkaido before the Great Fire of Hakodate in 1934. Pre–Meiji Restoration Hakodate (like other parts of around Hokkaido) was originally populated by the Ainu people, Ainu. Tōkaidō Shinkansen
The is a Japanese high-speed rail line that is part of the nationwide Shinkansen network. Along with the San'yō Shinkansen, it forms a continuous high-speed railway through the Taiheiyō Belt, also known as the Tokaido corridor. Opening in 1964, running between Tokyo Station, Tokyo and Shin-Ōsaka Station, Shin-Ōsaka, it was the world's first high-speed rail line, and it remains one of the world's busiest. Since 1987, it has been operated by the Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central), prior to that by Japanese National Railways (JNR). There are three types of services on the line: from fastest to slowest, they are the limited-stop ''Nozomi (train), Nozomi'', the semi-fast ''Hikari (train), Hikari'', and the all-stop ''Kodama (train), Kodama''. is the name of a high-speed train service running on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen, Tōkaidō and San'yō Shinkansen "bullet train" lines in Japan. Slower than the premier ''Nozomi (train), Nozomi'' but faster than the all-stations ''Kodama (train), Kodama'', the ''Hikari'' is the fastest train service on the Tōkaidō and San'yō Shinkansen that can be used with the Japan Rail Pass, which is not valid for travel on the ''Nozomi'' or ''Mizuho (train), Mizuho'' trains except through a special supplementary ticket.
