Côme Isaïe Rinfret
Côme Isaïe Rinfret (September 6, 1847 – November 8, 1911) was a Canadian physician and politician. Born in Cap-Santé, Portneuf County, Canada East, the son of F. J. Rinfret, Rinfret was educated at the Seminary of Quebec and studied medicine at Victoria University, Montreal from which he graduated with the degree of M.D. He was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the electoral district of Lotbinière in the 1878 federal election. Lotbinière (federal Electoral District)
Lotbinière (; later known as Lotbinière—L'Érable) was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that was represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 2004. It was created by the British North America Act 1867. It was renamed "Lotbinière—L'Érable" in 2000, and was abolished in 2003 when it was redistributed between Lotbinière—Chutes-de-la-Chaudière, Mégantic—L'Érable, Richelieu and Richmond—Arthabaska ridings. Geography It consisted initially of the County of Lotbinière. In 1876, the Parish of St. Sévérin was transferred to the County of Beauce for the purposes of representation in the House of Commons. 1896 Canadian Federal Election
The 1896 Canadian federal election was held on June 23, 1896, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 8th Parliament of Canada. Though the Conservative Party, led by Prime Minister Charles Tupper, won a plurality of the popular vote, the Liberal Party, led by Wilfrid Laurier, won the majority of seats (with only 41 percent of the vote) to form the next government. The election ended 18 years of Conservative rule. This was first election in Canada to produce a House of Commons with elected members of four parties. The 1891 Canadian federal election was held on March 5, 1891, to elect members of the House of Commons of Canada of the 7th Parliament of Canada. It was won by the Conservative Party of Prime Minister Sir John A. Macdonald. The main issue of the 1891 campaign was Macdonald's National Policy, a policy of protective tariffs. The Liberals supported reciprocity (free trade) with the United States. Canadian voters would return to the issue of free trade 20 years later in the 1911 federal election. Macdonald led a Conservative campaign emphasizing stability, and retained the Conservatives' majority in the House of Commons. It was a close election and he campaigned hard. Henri Bernier
Henry Bernier (July 6, 1821 in St. Louis de Lotbinière, Lower Canada – November 9, 1893) was a Canadian politician, businessman and manufacturer. The son of Jean-Baptiste Bernier and Margaret Bélanger, Bernier was educated locally. He married Henrietta Paré. Bernier was principal partner in H. Bernier and Company, which operated a foundry and produced agricultural implements. He was president of the Deschambault and Lotbinière Steamboar Company.
