Cárdenas, Panama
Cardenas was a township in the old Panama Canal Zone. Built on a site that was originally intended for Panama Canal Company housing, it was originally founded to house Federal Aviation Administration personnel. It housed 425 FAA personnel. Later, the 120 housing units built for the FAA were supplemented by 11 homes for staff members of the Middle America Research Unit (MARU), a medical research laboratory of the National Institute of Health (NIH). Overview Its only access from the main road system (specifically, Gaillard Highway) was on a road which started from Corozal. The main cemetery for the Panama Canal Zone, the Corozal American Cemetery, was located along this road. Past the cemetery was the LDS Church meetinghouse. The road continued to climb as it went past these until cresting a hill, with Cardenas located on the back slope of the hill. The Panama Canal Zone (), also known as just the Canal Zone, was a International zone#Concessions, concession of the United States located in the Isthmus of Panama that existed from 1903 to 1979. It consisted of the Panama Canal and an area generally extending on each side of the centerline, but excluding Panama City and Colón, Panama, Colón. Its capital was Balboa, Panama, Balboa. The Panama Canal Zone was created on November 18, 1903, from the Separation of Panama from Colombia, territory of Panama; it was established with the signing of the Hay–Bunau-Varilla Treaty, which allowed for the construction of the Panama Canal within the territory by the United States. Panama Canal Company
In 1513 the Spanish conquistador Vasco Núñez de Balboa first crossed the Isthmus of Panama. When the narrow nature of the Isthmus became generally known, European powers noticed the possibility to dig a water passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A number of proposals for a ship canal across Central America were made between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. The chief rival to Panama was a canal through Nicaragua. By the late nineteenth century, technological advances and commercial pressure allowed construction to begin in earnest. French entrepreneur Ferdinand de Lesseps led the initial attempt (1880–1889) to build a sea-level canal, as he had previously achieved in the building of the Suez Canal (1859–1869). Corozal American Cemetery
__NOTOC__ Corozal American Cemetery and Memorial is located approximately three kilometres west of Panama City, Panama. It is in the city of Corozal and is the location of 5,528 American veterans and others. A paved walkway leads from the Visitors' Center to a small memorial that sits atop a knoll overlooking the graves area. The memorial was established in 1923 by Congress to remember people who served overseas. It consists of a paved plaza with a 4-metre rectangular granite obelisk flanked by two flagpoles on which fly the United States and Panamanian flags. The plaza obelisk has engravings in Spanish and English. The English inscription reads: The American Battle Monuments Commission assumed responsibility for the care and maintenance of the Corozal American Cemetery in Panama in 1982. Fort Clayton
Fort Clayton was a United States Army base in the former Panama Canal Zone, later part of the Republic of Panama. Base Fort Clayton was located northwest of Balboa, Panama, with the Panama Canal located nearby. It closed in 1999 pursuant to the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. The Southern Command Network and 193rd Infantry Brigade were both headquartered there, as was the headquarters of United States Army South prior to its relocation to Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico. The 534th Military Police Battalion stationed here was partly responsible for law enforcement patrols on all Pacific side military installations. This base also had significant on base housing for military families in addition to many barracks. Portions of the installation overlook the Miraflores Locks of the Panama Canal.
