Czech Republic–Taiwan Relations
The Czech Republic and Taiwan (officially the Republic of China) maintain strong unofficial relations. In the absence of official diplomatic relations, the Czech Republic is represented by the Czech Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, and Taiwan by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Prague, Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Prague. Diplomatic exchanges In 1994, Czech Republic Minister of the Economy Karel Dyba became the first sitting government minister to visit Taiwan. Jaroslav Kubera, President of the Senate of the Czech Republic, planned a visit to Taipei prior to his death, prompting threats of retaliation from Ministry of Foreign Affairs (China), China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Kubera's successor, Miloš Vystrčil, however, led a delegation to Taiwan that arrived in Taipei on August 31, 2020. While there, Vystrčil gave a speech, declaring "I am a Taiwanese," echoing John F. Taipei Economic And Cultural Office, Prague
The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Prague (; ) Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office, represents the interests of Taiwan in the Czech Republic in the absence of formal diplomatic relations, functioning as a de facto embassy, ''de facto'' embassy. Its counterpart is the Czech Economic and Cultural Office, which was established in November 1993. Background The aim of the representative office is to further bilateral cooperation between Czech Republic and Taiwan in the fields of economics, culture, education and research. In addition, it offers consular services. On 4 July 1991, Taiwan and Czechoslovakia reached a mutual location agreement and on 7 August, the economic and cultural office was established in Prague, the capital of Czechoslovakia, becoming the second representative office to be established in Central Europe, Central and Eastern Europe. 2023 Czech Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in the Czech Republic in January 2023, resulting in the election of Petr Pavel. Incumbent president Miloš Zeman was not eligible to run due to the two-term limit. The first round took place on 13 and 14 January. Petr Pavel, former chair of the NATO Military Committee, ran as an independent on a pro-Western, pro-European platform, and was one of three candidates backed by the centre-right governing alliance Spolu (Czech Republic), Spolu. He won the first round of the election with 35.40% of the popular vote, ahead of Andrej Babiš, the former Czech prime minister running as the candidate of ANO (political party), ANO, who finished second with 34.99%. Babiš had expressed opposition to Czech support for Ukraine after the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Russian invasion and was characterised in the media as using Populism, populist rhetoric. The president of the Czech Republic, constitutionally defined as the President of the Republic (), is the head of state of the Czech Republic and the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic. Forum 2000
Forum 2000 is a foundation and conference of the same name held in Prague, Czech Republic. The Forum 2000 Foundation was founded in 1996 as a joint initiative of the Czech President Václav Havel, Japanese philanthropist Yohei Sasakawa, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel. Mr. Havel based his idea for Forum 2000 on the principle that, “it would be good if intelligent people, not only from the various ends of the earth, different continents, different cultures, from civilization's religious circles, but also from different disciplines of human knowledge could come together somewhere in calm discussion.” The main objective of the Forum 2000 conferences is “to identify the key issues facing civilization and to explore ways to prevent the escalation of conflicts that have religion, culture or ethnicity as their primary components.” Forum 2000 aims to provide a platform to discuss these important topics openly and to enhance global dialogue. Hsiao Bi-khim
Hsiao Bi-khim (born Bi-khim Louise Hsiao; 7 August 1971) is a Taiwanese politician and diplomat who has been the 13th and current vice president of the Republic of China since 2024, serving under President Lai Ching-te. She is Taiwan's first biracial vice president. She was the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States, Taiwanese representative to the United States from 2020 to 2023, and formerly served as a legislator of the Legislative Yuan from 2002 to 2008 and again between 2012 and 2020. Born in Kōbe, Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, to a Taiwanese father and an American mother, Hsiao grew up in Tainan, Taiwan, before moving to the United States, where she graduated from Oberlin College and earned a master's degree in political science from Columbia University.
