Cyprus Automobile Association
The Cyprus Automobile Association (Cyprus AA or CAA; Greek: Κυπριακός Σύνδεσμος Αυτοκινήτου) ( tr, Kıbrıs Otomobil Federasyonu (KOF)) is a non-profit organization governed by an elected council. Founded in 1933, it has the aim of offering assistance to the private motorist, in Cyprus and abroad, and to promote the interests of car owners in general. The CAA is a member of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT). The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA; en, International Automobile Federation) is an association established on 20 June 1904 to represent the interests of motoring organisations and motor car users. It is the governing body for many auto racing events, including Formula One. The FIA also promotes road safety around the world. Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) is an international federation of motoring organisations created to "represent the interests of national automobile associations and touring clubs". It was founded at the Casino Bourgeois in Luxembourg City on 4 August 1898 as the Ligue Internationale des Associations Touristes (LIAT) but changed its name to the Alliance Internationale de Tourisme (AIT) on 30 May 1919. Membership of the Alliance is limited to organisations active in the field of tourism, mobility, motoring and/or open air activities, and not open to individuals. Cyprus Rally
The Cyprus Rally is a rallying competition held yearly in Cyprus since 1970. The event is run by the Cyprus Automobile Association and is based in the city of Limassol (Lemesos). It is run on the winding roads of the nearby mountains of Troödos. It was part of the FIA's World Rally Championship (WRC) from 2000 to 2006. In 2007 and 2008 the event was part of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC). The Cyprus Rally rejoined the WRC in 2009, taking advantage of the new regulations to become the only mixed surface event. Between 2010 and 2012, the event was the final round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC), as well as the penultimate round of the MERC (except in 2011, when it was separately held in July), including in 2013. The Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) is a motor rally championship run under the auspicies of the FIA. First held in 1984 the championship encompasses a series of rallies held across Western Asia. The championship has featured long-running events like Rally of Lebanon, Rally Oman and the Troodos Rally in Cyprus as well as World Rally Championship event Jordan Rally. Many of the rallies in the region pre-date national independence, mostly from the United Kingdom. The championship has been dominated by Nasser Al-Attiyah has won 17 titles. The championship features events in Qatar, Kuwait, Iran, Lebanon, Cyprus, Jordan, Oman and the United Arab Emirates. The championship has also visited Bahrain, Syria and Saudi Arabia.
