Cumhuriyet Square (, meaning ''Republic Square'') is one of the main town square, urban squares of İzmir, Turkey, located between the neighbourhoods of Alsancak and Çankaya in the Konak, İzmir, Konak district. It is a coastal square at the port of İzmir, very close to Pasaport Quay along the shoreline of the Aegean Sea. It is one of the most popular urban squares of İzmir for public gatherings, together with Konak Square and Gündoğdu Square. History The square was built as part of the urban planning, master plan for the reconstruction of İzmir following the Great Fire of Smyrna, Great Fire in 1922. ''Cumhuriyet'' (; English: "Republic") is the oldest up-market Turkish daily newspaper. It has been described as "the most important independent public interest newspaper in contemporary Turkey". The newspaper was awarded the ''Freedom of Press Prize'' by Reporters Without Borders in 2015 and the Alternative Nobel Prize in 2016. Since 17 October 2005, the newspaper's headquarters have been located in Istanbul's Şişli district, after being the last newspaper to leave the traditional press district of Cağaloğlu.
