Culiacán, officially Culiacán Rosales, is a city in northwestern Mexico, the capital and largest city of both Culiacán Municipality and the state of Sinaloa. The city was founded on 29 September 1531 by the Spanish conquistadors Lázaro de Cebreros and Nuño de Guzmán, Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán under the name "Villa de San Miguel", referring to its patron saint, Michael the Archangel. As of the 2020 National Institute of Statistics and Geography, INEGI census, Culiacán had an estimated population of 808,416, making it the List of cities in Mexico, 21st most populous city in Mexico. The Tomateros de Culiacán () are a professional baseball team in the Mexican Pacific League based in Culiacán, Sinaloa. The ''Tomateros'' have won thirteen league championships and two Caribbean World Series in and . The team was founded in 1965 as part of the Sonora-Sinaloa League. Culiacán Cathedral
The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary (), also known as Culiacán Cathedral, is the Catholic cathedral that serves as the headquarters of the diocese of Culiacán, Mexico. On May 22, 1842, the seventh bishop of Sonora and Sinaloa, Lázaro de la Garza y Ballesteros, authorized construction of the church. Nuño De Guzmán
Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán (1558) was a Spanish conquistador and colonial administrator in New Spain. He was the governor of the province of Pánuco (province), Pánuco from 1525 to 1533 and of Nueva Galicia from 1529 to 1534, and president of the first Royal Audiencia of Mexico – the high court that governed New Spain – from 1528 to 1530. He founded several cities in Northwestern Mexico, including Guadalajara. Originally a bodyguard of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, Charles I of Spain, he was sent to Mexico to counterbalance the influence of the leader of the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire, Hernán Cortés, since the King worried he was becoming too powerful.
