Cuando Cubango Province
Cuando Cubango (Umbundu: Kwando Kubango Volupale) was a former province of Angola. It was divided into the provinces of Cuando and Cubango in 2024. Cuando Cubango had an area of 199,049km2 and a population of 534,002 in 2014. Menongue was the capital of the province. The name of the province derives from that of the Cuando and Cubango rivers, which flow through the eastern and western edges of the province, respectively. History Throughout much of the 1980s and 1990s, Cuando Cubango served as the location for the primary base camp of Angola's UNITA rebel movement, led by Jonas Savimbi. The rebel movement received support from the United States as part of the Cold War conflict against Angola's Marxist government, which was supported by the Soviet Union, Cuba and other communist states. Provinces Of Angola
Angola is divided into twenty-one provinces, known in Portuguese language, Portuguese as ''provĂ­ncias''. On 14 August 2024, Angola's National Assembly (Angola), National Assembly approved a law to create three new provinces: * Cuando Cubango Province was divided into Cuando Province and Cubango Province; * Icolo e Bengo Province was separated from Luanda Province; and * Moxico Leste Province was separated from Moxico Province. This law went into effect with its publication in the official gazette of Angola on 5 September 2024, and are expected to become operational in 2025. Cuangar
Cuangar is a city and municipality of the Cuando-Cubango province in Angola. It has 18,917 km2 and about 22,000 inhabitants. It is bounded to the north by the municipalities of Menongue and Nancova, to the east by the municipality of Calai, to the south by the Republic of Namibia, and to the west by the municipality of Namacunde. The municipality consists of the central commune, equivalent to the city of Cuangar, and also includes the communes of Savate and Caila (or Bondo). The name of the municipality derives from the name of a subgroup of the Ovambos, the Cuangares, who live in the area.
