Covington County, Alabama
Covington County (briefly Jones County), is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census the population was 37,570. Its county seat is Andalusia. Its name is in honor of Brigadier General Leonard Covington of Maryland and Mississippi, who died in the War of 1812. History Covington County was established on December 17, 1821. The Alabama state legislature changed the name to Jones County on August 6, 1868. Two months later on October 10, 1868, the original name was restored. The county was declared a disaster area in September 1979 due to damage from Hurricane Frederic and again in October 1995 due to Hurricane Opal. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (1.3%) is water. The county is located in the Gulf Coastal Plain region of the state. Leonard Covington
Leonard Wailes Covington (October 30, 1768 – November 14, 1813) was a United States Army brigadier general and a member of the United States House of Representatives. Biography Born in Aquasco, Prince George's County, in what was then the British Province of Maryland, Leonard Covington joined the United States Army as a Cornet in March 1792. He was promoted to Captain in 1794 and served in the Northwest Indian War (1785–1795) under Anthony Wayne, where he distinguished himself at Fort Recovery and the Battle of Fallen Timbers. He resigned from the military at the conclusion of the Northwest Indian War. In 1809, Leonard Covington returned to the Army as colonel of light dragoons, having served many years in the Maryland House of Delegates and in 1805–1807 as a Representative (Democratic-Republican Party) in the Ninth Congress. U.S. Route 331 (US 331) is a spur of U.S. Route 31. It currently runs for from Santa Rosa Beach, Florida east of Fort Walton Beach at US 98 to Montgomery, Alabama at US 80 and US 82. Unlike US 131, US 231, and US 431, US 331 never intersects with its "parent" route, US 31; the two routes come within of each other in Montgomery. Route description Florida U.S. Route 331 begins at U.S. Route 98 in Santa Rosa Beach. From there it runs north towards a long concrete slab bridge over Choctawhatchee Bay. Butler County, Alabama
Butler County is a county located in the south central portion of the U.S. state of Alabama. As of the 2020 census, the population was 19,051. Its county seat is Greenville. Its name is in honor of Captain William Butler, who was born in Virginia and fought in the Creek War, and who was killed in May 1818. History Butler County was formed from Conecuh County, Alabama, and Monroe County, Alabama, by an act passed December 13, 1819, by the Legislature while in session at Huntsville. This was the first session of the Legislature of Alabama as a State. The name of Fairfield was first proposed for this county, but was changed on the passage of the bill to Butler, in honor of Captain William Butler. State Route 137 (SR 137) is a state highway that serves as a north–south connection between the Florida state line near Wing and Andalusia. It travels through the southwestern part of Covington County. SR 137 serves as a continuation of Florida State Road 189 (SR 189) upon crossing into Alabama at its southern terminus and ends at US 29 southwest of Carolina. State Route 134 (Alabama)
State Route 134 (SR 134) is an east-west state route located in Covington, Coffee, Dale, Henry, and Houston counties in Alabama. It loosely parallels U.S. Route 84 (US 84) between Opp and the Chattahoochee River. Route description The route begins at US 331/US 84 along the Opp Bypass. It heads east into southern Coffee County, intersecting SR 189 and SR 87 en route to Enterprise. Upon reaching Enterprise, it does not follow Boll Weevil Circle around Enterprise but instead continues through the city via Damascus Rd, Main St, and East Park Ave. Between Enterprise and Daleville, it is concurrent with US 84, crossing into Dale County en route. In Daleville, it turns off of US 84 for a brief concurrency with SR 85 before turning east and northeast towards Newton. State Route 54 (SR 54) is a state highway in the extreme southern part of the U.S. state of Alabama. The western terminus of the highway is at an intersection with U.S. Route 331 (US 331) at Florala just north of the Florida state line. The eastern terminus of the highway is at an intersection with SR 52 just west of Samson. Route description SR 54 is routed along a two-lane road as it traverses Covington and Geneva counties. From Florala, the highway travels in a generally east–west orientation. The highway assumes a northeasterly trajectory as it approaches the Covington–Geneva county line, and continues this orientation until it reaches its eastern terminus in western Geneva County.
