Coutchman, Texas
Coutchman (sometimes spelled Couchman) is a ghost town in northern Freestone County, Texas, United States, some 4 miles southwest of Streetman off of Texas Farm to Market Road 246, near CR 994 and CR 995. Coutchman was settled around 1850 and named after local landowner William Coutchman. It had a peak population of about 300 people. Coutchman had a post office from January 1894 to February 1905, at which time post was directed to the post office in Wortham. In the 1910 census Coutchman was listed as having a population of 100 people. By 1980 there was no listing. The area ceased to have an identity as a separate community later in the 20th century. Freestone County, Texas
Freestone County is a county in the east-central part of the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 19,435. Its county seat is Fairfield. The county was created in 1850 and organized the next year. History Native Americans Archeological evidence of the farming Kichai band of the Caddoan Mississippian culture dates to 200 BCE in the area. The Hernando de Soto expedition of 1541 resulted in violent encounters with the Caddo Native Americans who occupied the area. Spanish and French missionaries carried smallpox, measles, malaria, and influenza as endemic diseases; the Caddo suffered epidemics, as they had no acquired immunity to these new diseases. Eventually, the Caddo were forced to reservations. The Tawakoni branch of Wichita Indians originated as a tribe north of Texas, but migrated south into East Texas. Streetman is a town in Freestone and Navarro counties in Texas, United States. As of the 2010 census the population was 247, up from 203 at the 2000 census. Geography Streetman is located in northern Freestone County at (31.876973, –96.324452). A largely undeveloped part of the town extends north into Navarro County. Streetman is on Texas State Highway 75, which leads southeast to Fairfield, the Freestone County seat. Interstate 45 passes southwest of Streetman, with access from Exits 211 and 213. Wortham is a town in Freestone County, Texas, United States. The population was 980 at the 2020 census. Geography Wortham is located in the northwest corner of Freestone County at (31.788472, –96.462209). Texas State Highway 14 runs through town as Third Street, leading north to Richland and Interstate 45, and south to Mexia. Fairfield, the Freestone County seat, is to the southeast.
