Couple (mechanics)
In mechanics, a couple is a system of forces with a resultant (a.k.a. net or sum) moment of force but no resultant force.''Dynamics, Theory and Applications'' by T.R. Kane and D.A. Levinson, 1985, pp. 90-99Free download/ref> A better term is force couple or pure moment. Its effect is to impart angular momentum but no linear momentum. In rigid body dynamics, force couples are ''free vectors'', meaning their effects on a body are independent of the point of application. The resultant moment of a couple is a ''special case'' of moment. A couple has the property that it is independent of reference point. Simple couple ;Definition A couple is a pair of forces, equal in magnitude, oppositely directed, and displaced by perpendicular distance or moment. The simplest kind of couple consists of two equal and opposite forces whose lines of action do not coincide. This is called a "simple couple".''Dynamics, Theory and Applications'' by T.R. Couple (app)
Couple, formerly Pair, was a mobile app that provided a mobile messaging service for two people, especially romantic couples. Like many mobile phone messaging applications, Couple allows users to share text, photos, video and other content. It is a competitor to apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and KakaoTalk, but it is unique in that it is for communicating with exactly one other person. Couple is one of a slew of mobile applications that intentionally confine their communication to a small group, as opposed to large public or semi-public networks like Twitter. The app is no longer available on iPhone and Android. The free application garnered more than 100,000 users after only a week. TenthBit, the company producing Couple, is part of the Y Combinator startup incubator. On February 2, 2013, TenthBit announced that it had acquired rival U.K. app Cupple and changed the name of the merged app from Pair to Couple. On February 12, 2016, Couple was acquired by Life360 Lif ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Rafter
A rafter is one of a series of sloped structural members such as wooden beams that extend from the ridge or hip to the wall plate, downslope perimeter or eave, and that are designed to support the roof shingles, roof deck and its associated loads. A pair of rafters is called a ''couple''. In home construction, rafters are normally made of wood. Exposed rafters are a feature of some traditional roof styles. Applications In recent buildings there is a preference for trussed rafters on the grounds of cost, economy of materials, off-site manufacture, and ease of construction, as well as design considerations including span limitations and roof loads (weight from above). Types in traditional timber framing There are many names for rafters depending on their location, shape, or size (see below). The earliest surviving roofs in Europe are of common rafters on a tie beam; this assembly is known as a "closed couple". Later, principal rafters and common rafters were mixed, which ...
