Country Media, Inc. is an American media and web design company based in Salem, Oregon, which owns 10 community newspaper properties in Oregon and one in California. The company previously owned newspapers in the West North Central states. History Origins Country Media, Inc. was largely founded by Steve Hungerford, a Nebraska-native who earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska and a master's in journalism from the University of Oregon. He moved to Oregon in 1973 to purchase the weekly ''Milwaukie Review'' newspaper. In the mid-1980s, he was named director of human resources at the '' Salem Statesman Journal'' and, in 1988, became executive editor and publisher of the ''Daily Enterprise Courier'' in Oregon City. Hungerford and his wife Carol moved to Nebraska in 1990 when he was named publisher of the '' Scottsbluff Star-Herald''. The ''Seaside Signal'' is a weekly newspaper published for the community of Seaside, Oregon, United States. History The ''Signal'' was founded Saturday, March 25, 1905 as a weekly. It was edited by R. M. Watson. The paper was a tabloid format and cost $2.00 for a year's subscription. On May 11, 1907 the newspaper changed to a broadsheet format. Since then, the ''Signal'' has changed formats numerous times. Erle Norton Hurd sold the ''Seaside Signal'' in 1927 to Max Schafer Sr. along with ''Raymond Herald'' owners C.S. Beall and Harry Beall. Schafer Sr. operated the paper with his son Max Schafer Jr. for decades until selling it in 1974. The new owners were H.H. Publishing Co., a corporation operated by three publishers: Dave Juenke, Walter Taylor and Lee Irwin. In 1980, Juenke sold the ''Signal'' to Scripps-Ifft Newspapers Inc. The ''Lincoln County Leader'' is a weekly newspaper based in Newport, Oregon, United States. It was formed in January 2024 by the merger of the ''Newport News-Times'' and ''Lincoln City News Guard'', both published by Country Media, Inc. The newspaper takes the name of an earlier publication that existed from 1893 to 1987. The ''Leader'' is the newspaper of record for Lincoln County. History At least 20 different newspapers have been published in the Lincoln County area. The county's first newspaper was the ''Yaquina Post'', established in 1882 and published in Yaquina City by Collins Van Cleve. The ''Headlight-Herald'' is a weekly paper published in Tillamook, Oregon, United States, since 1888. It is published on Tuesdays by Country Media, Inc. and has a circulation of 6,621. It is the newspaper of record for Tillamook County. History ''Tillamook Headlight'' On June 8, 1888, the ''Tillamook Headlight'' was first published with C. E. Wilson as publisher and J. E. Edwards as editor. It was the first newspaper published in Tillamook County. The name is a reference to the Tillamook Rock Light off the shore of the Tillamook Head. The ''Cannon Beach Gazette'' is a monthly newspaper serving Cannon Beach, Oregon. History The ''Cannon Beach Gazette'' published its first edition on June 3, 1976, and was founded by on Don Holden. He sold the paper in 1998. Tom Mauldin and Cat Mauldin owned purchased the newspaper in 2003 and sold it to Country Media, Inc. in October 2006. Three years later newspaper was expanded from tabloid size to broadsheet. Country Media sold it to EO Media Group in February 2013, who sold it back to them in May 2019. Following the sale, the paper's publishing frequency changed from twice monthly to weekly. But in 2024, the newspaper switched to monthly publication. Langdon is a city in Cavalier County, North Dakota, United States. It is the county seat of Cavalier County. The population was 1,909 at the 2020 census. Langdon was designated as the county seat in 1884, was founded in 1885, and was incorporated on February 25, 1888. History A post office has been in operation in Langdon since 1886. The city was named for Robert Bruce Langdon, a politician and railroad official. On October 29, 1887, ''The Courier'', an early Langdon newspaper, reported that Rosa Lake, Lemon, Olga, and Langdon were all vying for the position of county seat. Anecdotal stories tell of several settlers who succeeded in voting several times by simply changing their hats and coats. When all votes were tallied, it was found that Langdon had polled 301 votes, Olga 246, Rosa Lake 55, and Lemon 11. Baker, Montana
Baker is a city in and the county seat of Fallon County, Montana, United States. The population was 1,802 at the 2020 census. It was named after A. G. Baker, an engineer with the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. History Baker was built along the transcontinental rail line of the Milwaukee Road near where the railroad created a lake to supply water to its steam locomotives. The city was known as Lorraine for a brief time before being renamed in honor of Milwaukee Road engineer A.G. Baker. KFYR-TV (channel 5) is a television station in Bismarck, North Dakota, United States, affiliated with NBC and Fox. Owned by Gray Media, the station has studios on North 4th Street and East Broadway Avenue in downtown Bismarck, and its transmitter is located near St. Anthony, North Dakota.
