Costache Negri is a commune in Galați County, Western Moldavia, Romania with a population of 2,562 people. It is composed of a single village, Costache Negri, and is named after Costache Negri, an 1848 revolutionary, who had an estate in the village, which was previously named Mânjina. Galați County
Galați () is a county (județ) of Romania, in Moldavia region, with the capital city at Galați, between latitude, 45°25'N and latitude, 46°10'N latitude, longitude, 27°20'E and longitude, 28°10'E longitude. It borders the counties of Vaslui County, Vaslui, Vrancea County, Vrancea, Brăila County, Brăila, Tulcea County, Tulcea. Western Moldavia (, ''Moldova de Apus'', or , also known as Moldavia, is the core historic and geographical part of the former Principality of Moldavia situated in eastern and north-eastern Romania. Costache Negri
Costache Negri (May 14, 1812 – September 28, 1876) was a Moldavian, later Romanian writer, politician, and revolutionary. Born in Iași, he was the son of ''vistiernic'' (treasurer) Petrache Negre. The scion of a Boyars of Moldavia and Wallachia, boyar family, he was educated at home, and then at the French boarding schools of Mouton in Iași and Repey in Odesa. In 1832 he was sent to pursue his studies in Austria, Germany, France, and Italy. During his stay in Paris he befriended Vasile Alecsandri, Ion Ghica, and Nicolae Bălcescu. Upon returning home, he established in 1841 a literary cenacle at his estate in Costache Negri, Galați, Mânjina, which became a center of political activism of unionists from Moldavia and Wallachia. Moldavian Revolution Of 1848
The Moldavian Revolution of 1848 is the name used for the unsuccessful Romanian liberal and Romantic nationalist movement inspired by the Revolutions of 1848 in the principality of Moldavia. Initially seeking accommodation within the political framework defined by the '' Regulamentul Organic'', it eventually rejected it as imposed by foreign powers (the Russian Empire) and called for more thorough political reforms. Led by a group of young intellectuals, the movement was mostly limited to petitioning and constitutional projects, unlike the successful uprising taking place later that year in neighbouring Wallachia, and it was quickly suppressed. This was despite the fact that the Moldavian revolutionaries were more moderate and willing to compromise in their demands for reforms than their Wallachian counterparts, as Moldavian political and social life continued to be dominated by a landed, conservative aristocracy, with the middle class still embryonic. The Geru () is a left tributary of the river Siret in Romania. It discharges into the Siret near Independența. Its length is and its basin size is . Before the regularization of the lower course of the Siret, it was a tributary of the Bârlădel, a secondary branch of the Siret. Tecuci () is a city in Galați County, Romania, in the historical region of Western Moldavia. It is situated among wooded hills, on the right bank of the Bârlad River, and at the junction of railways from Galați, Bârlad, and Mărășești.
