Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey
The Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS) is the largest project in the history of the Hubble Space Telescope, with 902 assigned orbits (about 60 continuous days) of observing time. It was carried out between 2010 and 2013 with two cameras on board Hubble – Wide Field Camera 3, WFC3 and Advanced Camera for Surveys, ACS – and aims to explore Galaxy formation and evolution, galactic evolution in the early Universe, and the very first seeds of cosmic structure at less than one billion years after the Big Bang. Science goals CANDELS is designed to document the first third of galactic evolution – on the redshifts from – via Deep field, deep imaging of more than 250,000 galaxies. Supernova
A supernova (: supernovae or supernovas) is a powerful and luminous explosion of a star. A supernova occurs during the last stellar evolution, evolutionary stages of a massive star, or when a white dwarf is triggered into runaway nuclear fusion. The original object, called the ''progenitor'', either collapses to a neutron star or black hole, or is completely destroyed to form a diffuse nebula. The peak optical luminosity of a supernova can be comparable to that of an entire galaxy before fading over several weeks or months. A Type Ia supernova (read: "type one-A") is a type of supernova that occurs in binary systems (two stars orbiting one another) in which one of the stars is a white dwarf. The other star can be anything from a giant star to an even smaller white dwarf. Physically, carbon–oxygen white dwarfs with a low rate of rotation are limited to below 1.44 solar masses ().
