Coppin Heights, Baltimore
Coppin Heights/Ash-Co-East is a predominately African-American working-class neighborhood in West Baltimore, Maryland. It is located south of North Avenue (Rt. 40), west of N Smallwood Street, east of N Dukeland Street, and approximately north of the railroad tracks. The community was originally called "Ash Co. East" (Ash-Co-East). In 1989, it was renamed Coppin Heights. The name "Coppin" is from Fanny Jackson Coppin a pioneering black educator. It is unknown what "Ash Co. East" means. Within its boundaries are Carver Vocational-Technical High School and Wilbur H. Waters Park. Mondawmin is a neighborhood located in the Western district of Baltimore, Maryland, United States. The neighborhood is surrounded by Druid Hill Park, the Whitelock Community, and Lower Park Heights. Fanny Jackson Coppin
Fanny Jackson Coppin (October 15, 1837 – January 21, 1913) was an American educator, missionary and lifelong advocate for Female education, female higher education. One of the first Black alumnae of Oberlin College, she served as principal of the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia and became the first African American school Superintendent (education), superintendent in the United States. Personal life Born into Slavery in the United States, slavery, Fannie Jackson's freedom was purchased at age 12 by her aunt for $125. Fannie Jackson spent the rest of her youth in Newport, Rhode Island working as a servant for author George Henry Calvert, studying at every opportunity. Coppin State University (Coppin) is a public historically black university in Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It is part of the University System of Maryland and a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. History Coppin State University was founded in 1900 at what was then called Colored High School (later named Douglass High School) on Pennsylvania Avenue by the Baltimore City School Board. It first had a one-year training course for the preparation of African-American elementary school teachers.
