Copenhagen City Hall (1728–1795)
A new, fourth City Hall in Copenhagen, Denmark, was built between Gammeltorv and Nytorv in 1728 on the foundations of Copenhagen City Hall (1479-1728), its predecessor which had been destroyed in the first Copenhagen Fire of 1728, Great Fire of Copenhagen earlier that same year. In 1795 it was itself destroyed in the second Copenhagen Fire of 1795, Great Fire of Copenhagen and later replaced by the Copenhagen Court House, new combined city hall and courthouse at Nytorv which was completed in 1815. Building The new city hall was built by Johan Conrad Ernst and Johan Cornelius Krieger and completed already the same year. Seven bays wide, the building consisted of two storeys and a cellar, under a mansard roof topped by a ridge turret. The facade was decorated with statues, columns and a bust of King Christian VI above the royal coat of arms. Johannes Rach
Johannes Rach (1720 – 4 August 1783) was a Danish painter and draughtsman whose works from Copenhagen and Indonesia are a valuable source of architectural and cultural historic knowledge. He began his artistic career painting topographical views for the royal court in Copenhagen, mosrlt in close collaboration with Hans Heinrich Eegberg without any clear indication of who painted whatm and credits are therefore often given to Rach & Eegberg. Later he traveled to the Dutch East Indies, by way of Saint Petersburg and the Netherlands, where he settled in Batavia (present day Jakarta), and had a military career in the Royal Dutch East Indies Army. At the same time he continued to pursue his artistic work with considerable commercial success. He set up a large studio with local employees who worked in his style, and produced depictions of the city and surrounding countryside for the local elite.
