The Copa del Rey 2001 was the 65th edition of the Spanish basketball Cup. It was organized by the ACB and was disputed in Málaga in the Palacio Martín Carpena between days 15 and 18 of March, 2001. The Copa del Rey de Baloncesto ( English: ''Basketball King's Cup'') is an annual cup competition for Spanish basketball teams organized by Spain's top professional league, the Liga ACB. History Originally known as the ''Copa de España de Baloncesto'', was first played in 1933 and contested in its first editions only by teams from the provinces of Madrid and Barcelona. It was the first nationwide basketball competition played in Spain. During the Francoism, it was referred as the ''Copa del Generalísimo de Baloncesto'', before becoming the ''Copa del Rey de Baloncesto'' in 1977. Format Until the establishment of the ACB in 1983, the Cup was played in its latest rounds with double-legged series and its final as a single game in a neutral venue. Éric Struelens (born 3 November 1969) is a former Belgian professional basketball player. Professional career Struelens won the Belgian League championship 7 times (6 with Racing Mechelen and 1 with Spirou Charleroi) and the Belgian Cup 4 times (3 with Mechelen and 1 with Charleroi). Alberto Herreros Ros (born 20 April 1969) is a retired Spanish professional basketball player. At a height of 2.00 m (6'6 ") tall, he played at the small forward position. He is considered to be one of the best Spanish basketball players and shooters of all-time, as he is the Spanish ACB League's all-time leader in both three-pointers made and total points scored. Steven Michael Hawkins (born October 28, 1972), is an American former professional basketball player. During his professional club career, Hawkins played in the National Basketball Association (NBA), and in several other leagues around the world. Roberto Dueñas Hernandez (born 1 November 1975) is a retired Spanish professional basketball player. At a height of tall, he played at the center position. The Asociación de Clubes Españoles de Baloncesto (Spanish Basketball Clubs Association), more commonly known as the Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto (ACB), is a national sports association responsible for administering the Liga Endesa, the main professional basketball league in Spain. The organisation was founded in 1982. Competition The 18 member clubs of the ACB are grouped into the Liga Endesa. In any given season a club plays each of the others in the same division twice, once at their home stadium and once at that of their opponents.
