Coon-Sanders Original Nighthawk Orchestra
Coon-Sanders Original Nighthawk Orchestra was the first Kansas City jazz band to achieve national recognition, which it acquired through national radio broadcasts. It was founded in 1918, as the Coon-Sanders Novelty Orchestra, by drummer Carleton Coon and pianist Joe Sanders. History Carleton Coon was born February 5, 1894, in Rochester, Minnesota, United States, and his family moved to Lexington, Missouri, shortly after his birth. Joe Sanders was born on October 15, 1896, in Thayer, Kansas. Sanders was known as "the Old Left Hander" because of his skills at baseball, but he gave up playing the sport in the early 1920s to concentrate on dance music as a career. Coon and Sanders met around 1918 in a music store, and formed the band the same year. Cord (automobile)
Cord was a brand of American luxury automobile manufactured by the Auburn Automobile Company of Connersville, Indiana, from 1929 to 1932 and again in 1936 and 1937. Auburn was wholly owned by the Cord Corporation, founded and run by E. L. Cord as a holding company for his many transportation interests (which included the Lycoming engines, Stinson aircraft, and Checker Motors). Cord was noted for its innovative technology and streamlined designs. Innovations Cord innovations include front-wheel drive on the L-29 and hidden headlamps on the 810 and 812. WGN (720 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station in Chicago, Illinois, featuring a talk radio format. WGN's studios are in the Chicago Loop, while the transmitter is in Elk Grove Village. WGN also features broadcasts of Chicago Blackhawks hockey and Northwestern University football and basketball. Big Band Remote
A big band remote (a.k.a. dance band remote) was a remote broadcast, common on radio during the 1930s and 1940s, involving a coast-to-coast live transmission of a big band. Overview Broadcasts were usually transmitted by the major radio networks directly from hotels, ballrooms, restaurants and clubs. During World War II, the remote locations expanded to include military bases and defense plants. Band remotes mostly originated in major cities, including Boston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Chicago. The usual procedure involved the network sending a two-man team, announcer and engineer, with remote radio equipment to a designated location. Teddy Roy
Theodore Gerald Roy (April 9, 1905, Du Quoin, Illinois - August 31, 1966, New York City) was an American jazz pianist. Roy played cornet before switching to piano. He played in the Coon-Sanders Original Nighthawk Orchestra and with Jean Goldkette and Frankie Trumbauer early in his career. While in Boston in 1933, he played with Bobby Hackett and Pee Wee Russell, then led his own band in Massachusetts in 1934. Following this, he worked in various dance bands in New York City in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He served in the Army from 1943 to 1945, then played with Max Kaminsky and the new version of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band with Eddie Edwards and Wild Bill Davison. From 1946 to 1959, he played mostly freelance in New York City and on Long Island; among those he played with were Russell, Kaminsky, Miff Mole, and Wingy Manone. He also did solo work in the 1950s. Blackhawk (restaurant)
The Blackhawk was a restaurant in the Chicago Loop from 1920 to 1984. It served a menu of American cuisine, notably prime rib and a signature "spinning salad bowl", and was, in the early part of its history a nationally known entertainment venue for Big Band music. Its legacy continued until 2009 at Don Roth's Blackhawk in Wheeling, Illinois. History Otto Roth opened The Blackhawk on December 27, 1920, at 139 N. Wabash.
