Cook Islands At The 2024 Summer Olympics
The Cook Islands competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024. It was the nation's tenth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics. The Cook Islands sent their first delegation to the Olympics at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea. In 2024, the country sent two athletes to the Olympics across two sports. They were Alex Beddoes in athletics and Lanihei Connolly in swimming. No athlete from the Cook Islander delegation progressed past the first rounds in their events. Beddoes and Connolly were the flagbearers at the opening ceremony, and Connolly was the flagbearer for the closing ceremony. Cook Islands Sports And National Olympic Committee
Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee (CISNOC) (IOC code: COK) is the governing body for sports in Cook Islands and its National Olympic Committee. Originally founded in 1943 as the Rarotonga Sports Association, the organisation became the Cook Islands Sports Association in 1960. In 1986 it was recognised by the International Olympic Committee and changed its name to the Cook Islands Sports & Olympic Association (CISOA). In 2002 it changed its name to the Cook Islands Sports & National Olympic Committee. In 1992 when Lotto was introduced to the Cook Islands, it was used to fund CISOA, with 35% of sales going to the organisation. Mona McSharry (born 21 August 2000) is an Irish competitive swimmer. She is a two-time Olympian and won the bronze medal in the 100 metre breaststroke at the 2024 Summer Olympics. The women's 100 metre breaststroke event at the 2024 Summer Olympics was held from 28 to 29 July 2024 at Paris La Défense Arena, which was converted to a swimming pool for the swimming events. China's Tang Qianting was the favourite to win, though Lithuania's Rūta Meilutytė, the US's Lilly King, Italy's Benedetta Pilato and South Africa's Tatjana Smith were also in contention to win medals. All except Meilutytė qualified for the final. In the semifinals, national records for Ireland and Belarus were broken. In the final, Smith won gold with the winning time of 1:05.28. It is a square number, the smallest semiprime and composite number, and is considered unlucky in many East Asian cultures.
